Saturday early closure of the Community Center midday due to the risk of tornadoes, very large hail and damaging wind. You’ll need multiple, reliable ways of getting weather alerts; NOAA Weather Radio and a live Weather App are a winning combination. Much of Saturday morning will actually be warm and dry. The sun will come out and temperatures will soar into the upper 70s and lower 70s across the southern half of the panhandle. All that warmth, though, will set the stage for some powerful thunderstorms later today. The storm threat increases in intensity into the early nighttime hours of Saturday night. There will be some intense storms that will try to rotate and produce extremely large hail, gusty winds and tornadoes. There is a possibility of a few supercells moving through. A supercell is a highly organized thunderstorm characterized by a persistent, rotating updraft called a mesocyclone, which can lead to tornadoes. Please have a way to be alerted to any storm warning in your area before you head to bed. Leave your ringer up, make sure you have emergency alerts turned on and be prepared to evacuate to a room without windows.

Residents urged to prepare for severe weather through the weekend Thursday, March 13 - The National Weather Service in Mobile is predicting isolated severe weather conditions for our area beginning this afternoon, Thursday, March 13, and Friday night, March 14, through Saturday. Santa Rosa County has been placed under an enhanced to moderate risk for severe weather for Saturday, March 15. Below is a summary of the potential impacts: IMPACT #1 - Isolated Severe Storms Today, March 13 Isolated strong to severe storms are possible this afternoon, producing gusty winds and large hail. IMPACT #2 - Severe Storms Possible Friday Night, March 14 Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible on Friday, March 14, between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday, March 15. These thunderstorms may be capable of producing damaging winds and large hail. The possibility of tornadoes cannot be ruled out. IMPACT #3 - Severe Thunderstorms Likely on Saturday, March 15 There is an enhanced to moderate risk of isolated supercells developing Saturday afternoon through Saturday night ahead of a squall line that will swing across the area from west to east. Strong tornadoes, strong winds (up to 70 mph), and quarter-size hail are all possible. Prepare now for severe weather. Make sure all family members know the plan. Clean up any items in your yard that may become projectiles due to high winds. This includes patio furniture, decorations and plants. Have a kit with supplies ready to go when a tornado warning is issued. Suggested items to include are: A bike helmet or some form of head protection for each family member. A flashlight or electric lantern. Charged cell phone power bank. A whistle or air horn in the event you are trapped under debris. First aid kit. Know where you will go (interior rooms, basement - never a car or mobile home) if a tornado warning is issued and don't forget your pets!

Santa Rosa County Household Hazardous Waste Amnesty Day at South Santa Rosa Service Center Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Amnesty Day will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon at the South Santa Rosa Service Center, 5841 Gulf Breeze Pkwy. in Gulf Breeze. This event allows residents to dispose of HHW at no charge without having to drive to the Central Landfill in Milton. Residents may be required to remove items from their vehicles. Remember, HHW items can cause injury if handled improperly. These items usually have a warning or cautionary statement on their labels, such as flammable, corrosive, poison or toxic. The following items will be accepted and should never be disposed of with household garbage: -up to eight regular car or truck tires per vehicle, no large, heavy-duty or racing tires are accepted -up to five gallons of antifreeze, gasoline, paint, solvents, and oil (including cooking oil) -oil filters -lubricants -pesticides and fertilizers -pool chemicals and household cleaners -battery backups, rechargeable batteries (from vehicles, lawnmowers, laptops, -cellphones, coin cells) no alkaline batteries! -propane bottles -aerosol cans -flat-screen monitors and flat-screen TVs only -computers, laptops, tablets, cellphones -stereos, radios, amplifiers -printers, copiers, fax machines, circuit boards -power tools and extension cords -DVD/DVR players -remotes and gaming systems -up to 20 fluorescent light bulbs -fire extinguishers -approved sharps containers - Bring a full, approved sharps container for proper disposal and receive a free replacement Conditionally exempt small-quantity generators (small businesses, schools and growers, etc.) will be accepted at a reduced rate. CESQG waste is accepted by appointment only. Call (850) 981-7135 by 12 p.m. the day before the event to schedule a drop-off time. Waste tires will also be accepted at the same location, during Household Waste Amnesty Day. A maximum of eight (8) tires per Santa Rosa County resident will be accepted free of charge with a photo ID as proof of residency. Tires from commercial shops and vendors will not be accepted. Residents can drop off tires during HHW Amnesty Day event hours 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Santa Rosa residents can dispose of household hazardous waste, including sharps, Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the HHW center at the entrance to the Central Landfill, 6337 Da Lisa Road in Milton. Regular, light duty, truck or car tires are accepted for $5 each, year-round. Amnesty Day is made possible by Santa Rosa County in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Okaloosa County Environmental Office.
