Bainbridge Island’s eighth Annual Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration on Monday, Oct. 14 focused on the history of education activism on Bainbridge Island and honoring those who came before us. There were presentations about the origins and work of Bainbridge Island School District's Ethnic Minority Coalition (known today as the Multicultural Advisory Commission), a delicious potluck and lively performance by Grupo Bayano, a Caribbean music and dance group. There was also a screening of "Honor Thy Mother," which highlights Bainbridge Island's unique Indipino community. The City's Indigenous Peoples Day Resolution was read by students representing Bainbridge Island High School’s Ethnic Multicultural Student Association. The resolution passed in 2016 serves as a reminder that on Bainbridge Island, the second Monday of October focuses on elevating Indigenous experiences and voices, in contrast to Columbus Day, which has traditionally suppressed or erased Indigenous history. This commitment is embedded in the language of our City, reflecting our values and aspirations. This week's video was published in the latest City Manager's Report - out today 10/18/24 - see the full report here: https://conta.cc/3AgRAiO This year's Indigenous Peoples Day event was put on by the Indipino Community of Bainbridge Island and Vicinity, Suquamish Tribe, BAINBRIDGE ISLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT, Bainbridge Island School District Multicultural Advisory Council, IslandWood, and the City.
关于我们
City Government: The City began with the incorporation of the town of Winslow in 1947. In 1991, the city annexed the remainder of the Island, establishing the City of Bainbridge Island. The annexation allowed the city government to take full responsibility for providing dedicated services to the entire island. As a non-charter code city, Bainbridge Island originally operated under a Mayor/Council form of government. The form of government has been changed following a May 19, 2009 vote in which a majority of islanders expressed a preference for the Council/Manager form of government. This form of government is regulated under the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 35A.13.

Yesterday's Welcome Pole Dedication was a truly special event! Suquamish Tribe elder and master carver Randi Purser’s 14-foot cedar Welcome Pole is a breathtaking addition to the Sound to Olympics Trail and Bainbridge Island. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the dedication! The pole represents Chief Seattle’s father, Schweabe, and complements another carved post* across Puget Sound that honors his mother, Scholitza, holding him as a baby. This incredible piece of cultural art was gifted to the city by the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation, with funding from community donations and a Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island grant. We proudly partnered to manage and install the Welcome Pole. Visit the Welcome Pole on the Winslow Connector section of the STO (just up the hill from Winslow Way at SR 305)—a powerful symbol of Suquamish land acknowledgment and an invitation to learn more about Suquamish art and culture. *Randi Purser's carved post along the City of Seattle Waterfront will be a part of Oscar Tuazon and Collaborators' series of post and beam structures?that reflect the construction of traditional pre-settlement structures that were found on the shores of Puget Sound; these will stretch across three blocks along the waterfront, spanning over the bike path, from Columbia Street to Spring Street.
