Every day, we walk around Rio Grande Park, Herron Park and the Aspen Recreation Center, but do you know who has made these spaces a reality? Meet Tito Márquez, who has been one of the city's construction field superintendents for 25 years and has led major projects. He has led projects like Herron Park, the Rio Grande Trail, the Aspen Recreation Center, and the Cemetery Lane trail. He also has collaborated on the creation of parks at the Burlingame Ranch affordable housing project. "I really enjoy the projects that my team and I work on," he said. "From construction, operating the machines, landscaping, to working on the ground, every part of a project is special because when we finish, we see the project completed at 200%." Tito and the parks team have spent years building spaces for our community to enjoy beautiful, natural places. Do you know who built the open spaces where we walk with our family and friends? Today, we want to introduce you to Luis Contreras, our construction field superintendent, who has worked in the city of Aspen since 1993. When Luis started, there were only 23 parks in the city, and today, there are over 30, not including the trails and open spaces. "The city of Aspen has grown substantially over time, and this growth has been for the good of the community. I am proud to be part of this process," says Luis. Luis began working in landscaping, and today, after 30 years of work in the city, he is one of the construction field superintendents, leading projects for the city alongside the parks team. Remember, our beautiful city of Aspen has special open spaces, parks, and trails, all built with great effort and love for our community. We are proud of our parks team, who make every corner of the city a reality! Hoy queremos presentarte a Luis Contreras, superintendente de construcción que ha trabajado en la ciudad de Aspen desde 1993. As part of the Parks Department, Nick oversees various projects at Cozy Point Ranch located between Brush Creek and Juniper Hill. His collaboration and dedication to managing the equestrian center, Camp Cozy, and the Farm Collaborative significantly impacts the city of Aspen. ? Cozy Point Ranch is a historic 135-year-old Colorado landmark dedicated to preserving history and nature, while actively welcoming community participation. Cozy Point offers programs like the year-round equestrian center, which can accommodate up to 100 horses, and Camp Cozy, which nurtures confident, responsible riders through skill-based lessons and barn activities, including basic veterinary care. ? Since 2011, the Farm Collaborative open the Earth Keepers program, which has hosted kids' programs, ecological food initiatives, and community activities to inspire positive action and outdoor engagement. ? This recognition is due to our strong commitment to sustainability and environmental progress. The Environmental Health and Sustainability department attended the Mountain Towns 2030, where they highlighted the city’s innovative initiatives, such as our organic waste diversion policy and the Colorado Green Business Network, which supports local businesses in adopting sustainable practices. The team also spoke about the Building IQ initiative, which requires large buildings to track energy and water usage through a benchmarking phase with CORE, as well as plan for more public electric vehicle charging stations. This modernized version builds on the groundbreaking 1977 Ordinance 60, expanding protections against discrimination and reinforcing our commitment to an inclusive community. These new updates include broader definitions of protected classes, more inclusive language, and stronger guidelines for addressing discrimination. The City Council is confident that the new ordinance will continue to set a high standard for fairness and equal treatment for all residents and visitors.
