This week, we’re excited to shine a spotlight on Yvette McKinney, better known as “Evie”, our new City Clerk! When asked what she loves most about working for the city, Evie didn’t hesitate: “The growth and development opportunities!” Her journey with the City of Apache Junction started back in April 1990, and over the years, she’s worked in Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Economic Development, Finance, the Water District, and now the Clerk’s Office. One of her biggest career milestones came in 2008 when she landed a long-time goal, joining the Finance Department. She thrived in her role, embracing her “bean counter” mindset and building strong connections across the city. In July 2024, Evie celebrated another major achievement: becoming a Certified Election Officer through the Arizona Secretary of State’s program. Earning this certification required more than 80 hours of training and rigorous testing, making it one of her proudest professional moments. Originally from rural northern Minnesota, Evie appreciates Arizona’s versatility — she especially loves being able to visit snowy mountains within just a couple of hours while still managing to escape the frigid winters she grew up with. She spends her weekends in the summer taking trips to her family’s cabin in the White Mountains, where her retired husband and their two dogs, Millie and Max, eagerly wait for her. Outside of work, Evie is a talented ragtime pianist, loves to cook, and is an avid camper. She also homeschooled her three children through high school and loves spending time with her two grandsons, now 13 and 11. If she’s not cheering for the Vikings or sipping plain black coffee, she’s likely enjoying life at the cabin. Evie’s dedication, willingness to adapt, and positivity make her an important part of our team. We’re proud to feature her this week!

Apache Junction is taking a proactive stance against invasive species that threaten our desert landscape. Our new Invasive Species Management Program is dedicated to controlling the spread of plants like Stinknet and Buffelgrass, which increase wildfire risks and displace native vegetation. Through this initiative, we are: ? Providing community education and resources – We’ve launched a dedicated Invasive Species webpage to help residents identify and manage invasive plants. ? Hosting volunteer weed-pulling events – Monthly cleanups at Silly Mountain give the community hands-on opportunities to protect our environment. ? Encouraging proactive prevention – We educate homeowners on best practices, including early intervention, proper disposal, and responsible landscaping choices. With a collaborative approach, we can reduce the impact of invasive species and preserve the unique beauty of Apache Junction for generations to come. ??
