As the Illinois Commerce Commission investigates the future of gas in the state, a new analysis by the Citizens Utility Board (Illinois) and Groundwork Data reveals the financial risks in a business-as-usual approach to gas pipeline replacement in Chicago. ??The report demonstrates how escalating delivery costs, clean energy policies, and competition from clean energy alternatives represent major business threats to the long-term viability of Peoples Gas and the customers who depend on affordable energy to heat their homes. ?? This report offers even more evidence for why we need a managed, neighborhood-scale transition off of the gas system and onto clean energy infrastructure—an affordable and sustainable energy system that serves current and future generations. ?? Citizens Utility Board (Illinois) Executive Director Sarah Moskowitz recently spoke on a panel at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to discuss co-located load and remind policymakers/regulators about the importance of strong, pro-consumer energy policy: "The decisions we make impact vulnerable ratepayers who are already suffering."

“Illinois must begin to plan for a thoughtful, managed transition to cleaner, more affordable heat, instead of pouring billions more dollars into a methane gas system that is dirty, expensive and hazardous to the climate,” said Citizens Utility Board (Illinois) Executive Director Sarah Moskowitz. New report from Citizens Utility Board (Illinois) found that if Peoples Gas continues its methane gas-pipe spending plan, it would need a series of rate hikes averaging nearly 7%/yr through 2040. Yesterday in E&E News: “All signs indicate that if the December auction were to go forward as scheduled, ratepayers would pay astronomic prices for no benefit,” Clara Summers, who manages the Consumers for a Better Grid Campaign for the Citizens Utility Board of Illinois, said in an email. “We want to get back on schedule as soon as possible, but the market rules need to make sense first. The Solar Switch Chicagoland program helps locals connect with quality solar panel installers. A participant says: “I’m going to pay (my investment) back and then for 20-plus years I’m going to have free energy, essentially, which is exciting." This program is a partnership between Citizens Utility Board (Illinois), Midwest Renewable Energy Association and five local counties with support from iChoosr.
