CHPC's Howard Slatkin's op-ed today highlights the urgency and significance of the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity proposals, now before the City Council: They are "the culmination of decades of research and experience with zoning and housing ... building on lessons learned by housing providers, advocates, and other experts inside and outside government.... We need to seize this unique opportunity for the millions of New Yorkers counting on the city to address a housing shortage."
As the City Council prepares to convene its public hearings on the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity proposals, I wrote for this morning's Daily News about how these reforms transcend the significance of any individual official - they a generational opportunity to change the way we approach meeting our housing needs in New York City. Hope you enjoy the read: https://lnkd.in/evPt2vrS

CHPC's Howard Slatkin has something to say about why NYC has failed for years to rise to the challenges of growth. It's because we're stuck in the mid-century mindset of a city that isn't growing.
Jane Jacobs was not an advocate for “small scale” urbanism. She was an advocate for compact urbanism. And there is a massive difference between the two. The premise (repeated) here is wrong. Further, her solution to lack of supply and to gentrification (the subject of the “self-destruction of diversity” chapter of Death & Life) was to build more— more city! More compact, walkable, diverse, and desirable city! She was all for building big in that way.

Check out quotes from CHPC Executive Director Howard Slatkin in Streetsblog NYC's latest article by Sophia Lebowitz! Alongside other experts, Howard discussed the high hidden costs of parking requirements, and how the #CityofYes for Housing Opportunity zoning changes put housing ahead of vehicle storage. ?? "If someone has to move, they might not be able to find housing where they can be close to the people and things they want to be close to…the absence of growth means housing for fewer people and more displacement, period." https://lnkd.in/eSMkbm4i

On Tuesday evening, I spoke with Errol Louis on Inside City Hall about the blunt instrument of Rent Guidelines Board increases and how this contentious process highlights the fundamental need for more homes to address NYC’s long-running housing emergency. https://lnkd.in/ex9a6qA2 Relatedly, check out Citizens Housing and Planning Council's research into how we can grow and diversify our housing stock to meet the wide-ranging needs of New Yorkers: https://lnkd.in/ef-DCBR9
