Family Reunion Festival came with a special surprise this year when Tribal members were the first to be introduced to the CPN Eagle Aviary’s recently hatched golden eagle, Kishko - one of two eaglets to hatch this spring after two of the Aviary’s golden eagles paired. CPN students from throughout the United States were selected to participate in the 2024 Potawatomi Leadership Program. When Rachel Watson received a Tribal scholarship to help cover the cost of their master’s degree, they had no idea that just a few years later, they would head the Nation's Department of Education. Watson, a member of the Navarre family, was named director of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Department of Education at the beginning of 2024. Watson has plans to reach more Tribal members with Department of Education resources. “It’s about the future of the Potawatomi Nation. CPN Housing Department Director and Osage Nation tribal member Scott George is the first Native American to be nominated for an Academy Award for Music (Original Song) for his composition of “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People),” featured in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. This year’s Academy Awards, which takes place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, will air Sunday, March 10, on ABC. George and other Osage singers will perform during the awards ceremony. The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Department of Education's annual Tribal Education Departments’ Forum (TED Forum) brings together representatives from a variety of tribes and organizations to present information to educators from around the state, offering insight into what sort of services and opportunities are available for schools and Indigenous youth. CPN Tribal member and FireLake Foods marketing manager Nicole Sanchez was named Citizen of the Year by the TECUMSEH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE in 2023. Kimberly Elliot, executive director for the Tecumseh Chamber, says, “To know Nicole is to love Nicole. She’s definitely a people person, and she loves to make others happy.
