关于我们

Cities for CEDAW is a human rights movement to promote intersectional gender justice at the local level. Our mission is to foster gender justice and strengthen the rights of women and girls, in all their diversity, through local adoption and implementation of the principles set forth in the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). We strive to ensure our movement is grassroots-driven, intersectional, multigenerational and aligned with human rights standards. We provide resources and expertise to support communities, local advocates and government officials in passing and effectuating CEDAW measures in cities and counties across the U.S. CEDAW measures offer evidence-based frameworks for asserting and advancing the rights of women and girls within local jurisdictions. They galvanize local policies and practices to dismantle systemic barriers, address intersectional inequalities and ensure equal opportunities for all. Please feel free to reach us at [email protected].

CEDAW GR 40: Roadmap to Parity 50/50 We continue the #GR40Symposium organized by GQUAL and Opinio Juris with an article by Nicole Ameline, former Member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and Chair of the GR40 Drafting Group. Nicole, who led? the development of GR40, presents her views on how GR 40 establishes a transformative model to accelerate progress toward parity in leadership and decision-making. According to Nicole, the equal and inclusive representation of women in all decision-making systems is not only a fundamental human right, but also a vital global response to the disruptive challenges the world is facing today. ?? Jessica Pierson and I were proud to talk about #citiesforcedaw at Denison University in Granville, Ohio. Granville is the smallest CEDAW "city" with population of 5000+. Mayor Melissa Hartford said her village council wanted "to show everyone that her village government stood up for the human rights of women and girls".

Happy CEDAW General Recommendation No. 40 Day! Today, the UN CEDAW Committee released its highly anticipated guidance on "equal and inclusive representation of women in decision-making systems." The Committee emphasizes that "[a] 'surge in [gender] parity' at all levels is key to joint decision-making and bringing about the innovative solutions needed to build resilient societies at the local, national, regional and international levels." It sets forth concrete and actionable steps for local jurisdictions to follow in ensuring equal participation in decision-making. We encourage city and county governments in the U.S. to engage with this guidance in promoting inclusivity. General Recommendation No. 40 can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ehdnNRHz

Cities for CEDAW supports California's recent adoption of Senate Bill (SB) 1137 - which makes clear that discrimination can be compounded by the intersection or combination of protected characteristics. This measure distinguishes California as the first state to explicitly recognize intersectionality in anti-discrimination law. “Discrimination transcends singular dimensions,” as California State Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas, who introduced the bill, explains. She adds that SB 1137 “is common-sense reform that addresses the intersectionality of discrimination cases, providing greater protections for Californians, especially those from our most marginalized communities of color.” We believe the new law will bolster Cities for CEDAW's intersectional framework in local California jurisdictions.

Cities for CEDAW applauds the political courage of these countries in pursuing claims under #CEDAW based on the Taliban's #genderapartheid in Afghanistan. Pursuant to CEDAW Article 29, such claims could lead to proceedings before the International Court of Justice (notably, on which renowned feminist international law scholar Hilary Charlesworth now sits). For more information on this strategy, please refer to the Open Society Justice Initiative's foundational research here: https://lnkd.in/e9RcWaBV. Question to consider: How might this inaugural use of CEDAW's interstate complaint procedure impact the U.S.'s calculus in deciding whether to finally ratify the treaty?

I welcome Germany, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands intention to hold the Taliban accountable for violating the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) which eventually mean proceedings at the International Court of Justice ICJ, in the Hague. CEDAW is not the only convention violated by Taliban. We must end culture pf impunity of so that voiceless people start believing in the international legal system. Long way to go. @ABaerbock @melaniejoly @SenatorWong @ministerBZ @hrw @heatherbarr1 ??

What is intersectionality? From data collected by The Collaboratory and Race Equality Matters revealed, 44% of respondents said their company’s hiring practices do not reflect an understanding of intersectionality, with just 13% saying their workplace created a sense of community for people with intersectional identities. The word ‘intersectionality’ was first used in 1989 by Kimberlé Crenshaw, a leading American civil rights advocate and a scholar of critical race theory. She introduced the idea that inequalities can overlap, rather than remaining distinct and separate. The term intersectionality comes from the intersection of these issues (such as racism, sexuality, neurodiversity and social mobility), which can amplify the discrimination that certain individuals face. By understanding intersectionality and viewing how it can cause certain groups to be disadvantaged whilst another is uplifted, we can use it to challenge the systems of discrimination and privilege that have a profound effect on those it relates to. The mission of Cities for CEDAW is to foster gender justice and strengthen the rights of women and girls, in all their diversity, through local adoption and implementation of the principles set forth in the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). In 2022, Toledo joined as one of the Cities of CEDAW when the City Council voted and signed CEDAW, also known as the Bill of Rights for Women (globally) REF: O-095-22 Enacting a new Toledo Municipal Code Chapter 183. As Dr. Soon-Young Yoon prepared for the 10th Anniversary and Onward to Beijing +30, our Class 2024 Girls Hub—Young Women of Toledo 'A Seat at the Table' exhibition—had an opportunity to be showcased as part of Action Day for A Culture of Peace on September 21, United Nations, NY. https://lnkd.in/g6qnexSB Visit the virtual gallery here: https://lnkd.in/g-bVFTvq
