We are proud to spotlight the incredible women who make an impact at Citi Trends every day. In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting inspiring leaders across our organization and sharing their journeys, insights, and advice. First up, we are thrilled to feature Vanessa Davis, our Senior Director of Human Resources. With an impressive 19-year career at Citi Trends, Vanessa started on the Buying team before quickly transitioning into HR, where she has risen through the ranks to her current leadership role. Her dedication, expertise, and passion for people have shaped the company’s culture and helped drive Citi Trends forward. In this Q&A, Vanessa shares the lessons she’s learned along the way, and her advice for women looking to grow in their careers. Check out her story below! Q: Who is a woman—historical or personal—who has inspired you, and why? A: It may seem cliché, but my own mother has been one of my greatest inspirations. As a single parent, she always showed up, providing everything I needed—and many things I wanted but didn’t need. She put family first and was a natural caregiver, both in our home and in the community. Serving as a police officer in Savannah, Georgia, for over 35 years, she exemplified what it meant to uphold the law with integrity. She was always forthright and truthful in her role. As a young Black woman in law enforcement, she had to be strong, yet she never lost her compassionate approach when helping people in tough situations. From her, I learned the value of dedication and the importance of a strong work ethic. Q: What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned throughout your career? A: I’ve learned that it's okay to ask for help and seek clarity when needed. These are powerful tools that have helped me grow in my career. Knowing when to ask for help and seek understanding is a sign of strength and self-awareness. Q: What do you love most about your job? A: What I love about my job is that each day is different. There’s always something new to experience and learn. I also enjoy interacting with people, getting to know them, and helping them. As an HR professional, I’m often called upon to handle challenging situations, but I can confidently say that I’ve had more positive interactions than difficult ones in my role with Citi Trends. Q:?What advice would you give to young women pursuing their dreams? A:?Never give up on your dreams. No matter what they are, they matter—regardless of what others may think. Life comes in seasons, and there will be times when personal and professional priorities shift, making it hard to pursue your dreams at full speed. But every small step toward your goal is an achievement, every day spent working toward it is an accomplishment, and every journey along the way is a lesson learned. #WomensHistoryMonth #CitiTrends #WomenInLeadership

This Black History Month, we continue to spotlight our incredible associates as they share meaningful stories, historical moments, and powerful facts that honor Black leaders, pivotal events, and groundbreaking achievements in their hometowns. For our final feature, we’re proud to highlight Janet Stevenson, Store Manager in Starkville, Mississippi, as she shares insights into the legacy of Black history in her community. In this Q&A-style feature, Janet reflects on the influential figures and historical milestones that have shaped Starkville and continue to inspire future generations. Check out her story below! Q:?What does Black History Month mean to you personally? A: To me, Black history is a legacy of overcoming, thriving, and leading in the face of adversity. It is the wisdom of our ancestors, the sacrifices of those who came before us, and the power that lives within us today. It is the innovation of black inventors, the courage of civil rights leaders, the excellence of black artists and the undeniable impact that black people continue to have on every aspect of society. As we celebrate Black History Month, we are reminded that our stories matter, our voices are powerful, and our contributions are limitless. It is a time to honor those who paved the way, and to inspire the next generation to dream bigger, rise higher, and continue building a future where black excellence shines without limits. Black History is American history, and I am proud to be a part of a legacy that continues to change the world. Q:?Is there a historical Black figure from your town or community that you admire? Why? A:?Dr. Douglas Conner was Starkville’s first Black doctor, a trailblazer in medicine and community service. He earned his undergraduate degree from Alcorn State University in 1943 and later obtained his medical degree from Howard University in 1950. After completing his internship at Homer G. Phillips Hospital in St. Louis, he returned to Starkville in 1951 to open his medical practice, serving the community for over 50 years. Dr. Conner was known for his dedication to his patients, often accepting homemade goods as payment when they couldn’t afford medical bills. His commitment to healthcare and his compassion for those in need made a lasting impact on Starkville, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations. Q: Can you share a local Black history moment or event that has shaped your community? A: Unity Park in Starkville, MS, stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and progress in the community. Established to honor local leaders who played pivotal roles in the Civil Rights Movement, the park serves as a reminder of the strides made toward equality and justice. Through its commemorative plaques and community events, Unity Park continues to inspire future generations and reinforce the importance of inclusivity and progress in Starkville. #CitiTrends #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM

Through their perspectives, we’ll explore the deep cultural roots that make each city unique while recognizing the impact of Black history in shaping our present and future. For our second feature, we’re highlighting Michelle Clinton, Store Manager in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as she shares insights on the rich African American history of Detroit, MI. In this Q&A-style feature, Michelle reflects on the historical significance of her community and the powerful contributions that continue to inspire generations. Check out her story below! Q: What does Black History Month mean to you personally? A: For me, Black History month is a time to celebrate and reflect on the immense contributions, resilience, and achievements throughout Black culture. It is an opportunity to honor the voices, struggles, and progress that have shaped society, and to recognize the ongoing fight for equality and justice. It’s a moment to acknowledge both the triumphs and the continued work that needs to be done. ? Q: Is there a historical Black figure from your town or community that you admire? Why? A: I really admire Berry Gordy.?He is the founder of Motown Records, and he is known for revolutionizing the music industry. He founded Motown Records in 1959 with an $800 loan, making it the first major Black-owned record label to achieve mainstream success. The music that came from Motown Records had such an impact on the black community during that time as black people battled racism, segregation and many other cultural inequities. Music from recording artists affiliated with this label was one of the things that kept the community together and that is why I admire what Berry Gordy started. ? Q: Are there any Black-owned businesses, landmarks, or cultural sites in your area that have historical significance? A: The Motown Museum in Detroit, MI, is one of the most historically significant Black cultural landmarks in the country. It was founded by Berry Gordy’s sister Esther Gordy Edwards in 1985 to preserve the label’s legacy. ?Legendary artists including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and The Jackson 5 were signed to Motown Records, and many of their early recordings were made inside the building. The Motown Museum is a pillar in the community where people can go to learn about and see where some of the most iconic songs in music history were recorded. ? And stay tuned as we continue celebrating Black excellence all month long. ?#CitiTrends #BlackHistoryMonth #OurCommunityOurHistory
