For 14.5 million children in America living in poverty, challenges outside the classroom like the lack of adequate food, clothing, shelter, and health care, can stand in the way of success inside the classroom. At Communities In Schools, we work in schools to remove those barriers by building one-on-one relationships and providing integrated student supports to at-risk students, that empower them to stay in school and succeed in life. Whether it is clean clothes, help with school work, or emotional support to help a child cope with and recover from a traumatic event, we connect students with the relationships and resources they need to succeed.

Chronically absent students cannot succeed if they are not in school. The data shows that students who are chronically absent suffer major declines in test scores, fare worse in classes and are far less likely to graduate. Once they’ve left school, they are at a higher risk for health problems, difficulty finding jobs and a host of other negative outcomes. Students from low-income communities who already faced barriers are most impacted. Communities In Schools of Ohio is working in hundreds of communities nationwide alongside parents, educators, community-based organizations, and school and district leaders to help our students overcome obstacles and succeed in school and life.
