Since our initiation in 1985, over 100,000 students have received CIS support, and today, thousands of CIS alumni have achieved their college/career and personal goals. They are now leaders in our communities, working, flourishing, and giving back. Communities In Schools?(CIS?) is a national organization operating in more than 2,900 schools nationwide that ensures every student – regardless of race, zip code, or socioeconomic background – has what they need to realize their potential in school and beyond. CIS connects students to caring adults and community resources that help them see, confront, and overcome the barriers that stand between them and a brighter future. Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CIS-Charlotte) is an affiliate of the national organization, working locally inside 50+ Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CMS) schools. Together, with our CIS affiliates across the country, we are creating a powerful change movement made up of peers, students, and alumni committed to building an equitable path to education for future generations. OUR MISSION is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. WE ENVISION a community where every child and family thrives and is positioned for positive economic mobility. WE BELIEVE that transformative relationships are key to unlocking a student’s potential. We will succeed by including in our strategies, ingraining in our culture, and reflecting in our behaviors, principles and practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, we break down immediate and systemic barriers to create and sustain equitable outcomes.

We love this idea from CIS Site Coordinator Sheridan Lowery at Winterfield Elementary School! As #BlackHistoryMonth came to a close and #ReadAcrossAmerica Week began (this week), Ms. Lowery organized an African-American "Read-In" at Winterfield. She invited staff from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library to visit classrooms and read books to students by Black authors, featuring Black or Brown characters or Black history and culture. The "Read-In" was a big hit for the students and volunteers alike! It's important to develop a love of reading early on, and one of the best ways to engage kids is to share books with characters and storylines that students can relate to or see themselves in. What a great idea to tie Black History Month and Read Across America Week together! ???? And thank you to our friends at CMPD, the Sheriff's Office, and CM Library for participating! #earlyliteracymatters #ilovetoread

What a wonderful way to kick off our week! Thanks so much to Coca-Cola Consolidated and Food Lion for coming out to our staff meeting on Monday to donate cases of bottled water and snacks for students. Coca-Cola and Food Lion had already donated snacks, water, and other supplies at the beginning of the school year, but offered to donate more at this midyear point to replenish our supplies. Every school site we serve (55 CMS schools) received this mid-year “re-stocking”! ???? #AllinforKids #attendanceincentives #BeingPresentMatters
