We love this idea from CIS Site Coordinator Sheridan Lowery at Winterfield Elementary School! As #BlackHistoryMonth came to a close and #ReadAcrossAmerica Week began (this week), Ms. Lowery organized an African-American "Read-In" at Winterfield. She invited staff from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Library to visit classrooms and read books to students by Black authors, featuring Black or Brown characters or Black history and culture. The "Read-In" was a big hit for the students and volunteers alike! It's important to develop a love of reading early on, and one of the best ways to engage kids is to share books with characters and storylines that students can relate to or see themselves in. What a great idea to tie Black History Month and Read Across America Week together! ???? And thank you to our friends at CMPD, the Sheriff's Office, and CM Library for participating! #earlyliteracymatters #ilovetoread

They recently donated 30 laptops for our mid-year high school graduates - on top of already donating 60 laptops for students at the start of the school year. ???????? What a wonderful way to kick off our week! Thanks so much to Coca-Cola Consolidated and Food Lion for coming out to our staff meeting on Monday to donate cases of bottled water and snacks for students. Coca-Cola and Food Lion had already donated snacks, water, and other supplies at the beginning of the school year, but offered to donate more at this midyear point to replenish our supplies. Every school site we serve (55 CMS schools) received this mid-year “re-stocking”! ???? #AllinforKids #attendanceincentives #BeingPresentMatters

Yesterday we loved celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth at our 1CIS monthly staff meeting! Everyone wore either their HBCU, “Divine Nine”, or CIS swag, and we played a fun Black History Trivia contest. Can you name the 11 HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in North Carolina? How about the “Divine 9” fraternities and sororities? (Hint: just in case, the answers are in the photos…????) Our CIS-Charlotte team has many proud and dedicated HBCU graduates and Divine Nine fraternity/sorority members. There’s a long and rich history in these institutions that has had a deep impact on Black American culture, the Civil Rights Movement, promoting public service in local communities and around the world, and much more. About 60% of the students we serve identify as Black and we are proud that our team can serve as excellent role models and share the history of Black Excellence with them.
