Our local community near the Vision Center has established a new A&P mechanic's program at Pellissippi State Community College. We're excited to announce that students will have the opportunity to learn about aircraft maintenance in Blount County starting Fall 2025. The Director of Aviation role will be responsible for providing strategic direction, administrative leadership and operational management for the Aviation Technology program. Last week, I had the absolutely incredible opportunity to travel to the Grand Canyon for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 with some fellow Canadians. ?? There, we got to try out the stunning new Flight Sim and compare it to a real tours and then get ground and Cirrus Vision Jet tours of the canyon. There’s honestly something so humbling about seeing these sprawling and majestic vistas in person, and it really made me appreciate our planet even more. (Shoutout to our pilot who was a cool slick-haired Southern guy — reminded me of Cid from Final Fantasy VII. ??) And the fact that all of this can also be done far more accessibly in the Flight Sim game is all the more impressive. I've written a lot about how games can be a powerful tool for education and community building, and the painstaking detail with which Microsoft, Asobo Studio and their many partners have recreated and preserved the wonders of the world — from its many international people and locales to the litany of wildlife and even little trivia bits about what makes it all unique — in this game is a perfect example of that.
