Today the EU AI Act enters into force. Coincidentally, today is the end of my tenure as Team Leader for the AI Act at the European Commission. Also coincidentally, it was today seven years ago when I joined the Commission to work at the intersection of law, policy and technology. These years have been incredibly challenging and rewarding. As I look back - from developing the concept and structure of the AI Act, all the way to transforming that concept into a fully-fledged legal framework, picking its ‘name’, constantly reflecting and debating on its merits and shortcomings and negotiating it with the Council and the European Parliament - I am filled with a?multitude of emotions and memories. The AI Act will remain one of the defining moments of my career. I am grateful for the people I have met and worked with, the things I have learned and the contribution I could to make. Today the AI Act is no longer my project, it becomes an integral part of the EU legal system. In spite of my concerns, I do hope it will fit in well and be overall a driver for shared social and economic progress in the EU. We need innovation and we must be able to tap into the opportunities and benefits that this technology can bring after so much focus on the risks. Moving forward, it will be essential to ensure a timely, reasonable and sensible implementation in the broader context of the EU digital rulebook as well as a transparent and data-based assessment of its impact. At the same time, with AI being a matter of global interest and with the potential to help solve problems that are very context dependent, countries around the world will have an opportunity to understand and learn from the EU experience as the first mover in the AI regulatory space.
