We are thrilled to share that CIGeography’s detailed map of Taiwan was presented to President Lai by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC). The gift was presented during IPAC's 2024 Summit in Taipei, attended by nearly 50 cross-party lawmakers from 24 countries. Each lawmaker signed the map within the de-facto Taiwanese ADIZ, the only portion of the ADIZ where incursions are reported by the MND. Notable signatories included Olivier Cadic, Reinhard Bütikofer, and Sarah Champion. The map displays Taiwan's internal (within the baseline) and territorial waters (up to 12 nautical miles from the baseline) as well as its ADIZ, both claimed and de-facto. View President Lai's comments at the summit here: https://lnkd.in/dS85u3Z3 Attached photos from the event are courtesy of IPAC and the Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan).

The Patriot system is a key element of Western air and missile defense, playing a vital role in protecting Ukraine from Russian missile attacks. In our latest analysis, our analyst Zach Abdi takes a close look at the Patriot system, how it’s been used, how it’s evolved, and its impact in Ukraine. The article also explores how the system is integrated into defense networks globally, its importance to NATO and allied defense, and what the future holds for air and missile defense as global tensions rise. We were honored to collaborate with Sebastian Bae at CNA Corporation on an exciting project: designing a map for the "Sentinels of the Sea" Maritime Domain Awareness wargame. This wargame was featured in SEACAT 24, an annual exercise held in Singapore, where over 20 nations come together to engage in naval exercises and staff-level wargames. SEACAT, short for "Southeast Asia Cooperation and Training," is a multinational exercise hosted by the United States in partnership with Singapore. Its primary goal is to enhance maritime security cooperation across the Indo-Pacific region through real-time information sharing and collaborative training. SEACAT scenarios simulate real-world challenges like piracy, smuggling, and other maritime threats. By fostering collaboration and improving interoperability, SEACAT plays a crucial role in strengthening regional maritime security and building a united response to potential crises. For the wargame, we produced a detailed map of maritime Asia, highlighting vital infrastructure such as undersea pipelines, data cables, ship traffic density, and key LNG and harbor facilities. This map offers a comprehensive view of the region’s strategic assets, emphasizing the importance of protecting these critical areas amidst emerging maritime challenges. Check out the images below from the Philippine Navy and CNA Corporation.

Read Andrew Erickson's article on China's maritime space under Xi Jinping just publised on The National Bureau of Asian Research. It is a map-rich article featuring beautiful maps by Andrew Rhodes as well as a Hao-projection map we designed in collaboration with the author and Nadège Rolland.
Professor of Strategy (tenured full professor) at Naval War College China Maritime Studies Institute
Honored to contribute to?Nadège Rolland’s insightful Strategic Space series with The National Bureau of Asian Research! What are #China’s #military #maritime priorities? Easy to say historically and nearby, harder looking forward in time and distance… Overall, available #PRC writings suggest tentative prioritization: (1) Near Seas and First Island Chain, (2) out to Second Island Chain, (3) Western Pacific out to Third Island Chain bisecting Hawaii and northern Indian Ocean, (4) Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Arctic Ocean, and (5) beyond. Few sources explicitly delineate such layers—but few, if any, disagree. I include a (translated) table by Peking University Professor Hu Bo, which offers ideas in this regard. Delighted to work with?Louis Martin-Vézian?of?CIGeography?on a new “PRC Prioritized Maritime Spaces #Map”!?Projects China’s oceanic priorities and strategic zones. Offers best official depiction available of key Maritime Silk Road sea lanes in #Xi’s Belt and Road Initiative (#BRI). Plots PLA #Navy’s current bases as well as potential future first- and second-priority #ports that might offer special access/support. Grateful to Andrew Rhodes for permission to use three of his world-class maps! U.S. Naval War College Naval War College Foundation Navy League of the United States Admiral James G. Foggo (ret.) We are excited to share this latest series of maps developed for Khyle Eastin's excellent article on the role of space in China's strategic thinking for the The National Bureau of Asian Research. The maps below show the ground tracks for the BeiDou (BDS) constellation. Obtained from Two-Line Element (TLE) files, each satellite's orbital data was processed through a Python script using the SGP4 library to convert it into a line. The accuracy of the path prediction depreciates over time as a TLE only represents a snapshot in time of a particular satellite, but they remain very useful to provide an understanding of the coverage areas of these satellites. The BeiDou constellation was deployed from 2000 to 2020 in three phases. Initially composed of only IGSO and GEO satellites, BeiDou 2 and 3 transitioned to MEO orbits similar to those used by the GPS constellation, for true global coverage. Read Khyle's article here, which also includes an infographic on the most successful Long March rockets and their respective total launches! https://lnkd.in/dM9zy5Cj #cigeography #space #TLE #python #GIS

We're thrilled to unveil our latest map developed for The National Bureau of Asian Research. This comprehensive visualization captures the extensive global subsea telecommunications infrastructure that is operated or owned by PRC companies. This map not only provides a clear view of the network but also serves as a key illustrative component for April A. Herlevi's insightful article on PRC digital strategy. Through her analysis, we explore the strategic integration of these infrastructures within the broader undersea domain. ? To avoid interrupting the cable network, we used an azimuthal equal area projection centered on the North Pole. Find it on NBR's project page: https://lnkd.in/gpiuCvzw #DigitalStrategy #Telecommunications #SubseaCables #GlobalConnectivity #NBR ?
