Cyclones, droughts and storm surges are a daily reality in this part of the world. Everyone in the room has lived through a major weather event – and has a story to share about how to respond. ??? From early warning systems and back-up water supplies to more resilient infrastructure such as wharves, hospitals, and evacuation roads, CIF investments have been crucial to the preparedness of all three countries, and the region more broadly. ? Ahead of the #InternationalDayofForests, here is a story about the vital link between forests, food security, and livelihoods. In #Indonesia, our Forest Investment Program (FIP) and the Dedicated Grant Mechanism (DGM) support Indigenous communities like those in Cibarani. There, people are now able to keep the full earnings from their sap sugar sales, empowering local women and strengthening their economy. Wonderful to – twice! – address the global Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) event last week in #Barbados. The topic? How energy efficiency and low-carbon technologies can bring about rapid social and economic progress. It was a privilege to meet with Deputy Prime Minister of Tanzania, Doto Biteko, to explore how CIF can support Tanzania’s clean cooking ambition as part of their energy compact. It was also wonderful to reconnect with Team Nigeria, led by Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to discuss shared priorities for sustainable development and economic growth. My congratulations to Damilola Ogunbiyi for convening such an important gathering, to unite leaders behind #Mission300 and other critical initiatives to expand energy access. It was an honor to speak alongside the Hon. John Mbadi of THE NATIONAL TREASURY KENYA, Jon Creyts of RMI, Valerie Levkov from the IFC - International Finance Corporation, Tolulope Gbenro of the Youth Sustainable Development Network (YSDN), Jennifer Layke of World Resources Institute, Jo Cops of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), Christine Egan of CLASP, Marit Y. We recently met communities from the Democratic Republic of #Congo as part of taking stock of our work under our Forest Investment Program.?? ? A few insights from the study:? ??Concessional Finance can be a vital tool for supporting developing countries in their energy system transformations. ??Combining concessional funding with other instruments such as equity guarantees or capex subsidies can be an effective approach to help scale battery markets. ??In exploring advancements in green hydrogen technologies, prioritizing finance to develop enabling environments can be crucial to developing potential in this sector.
