When a parent is being sentenced, their role as a caregiver and the impact that incarceration may have on their children is rarely discussed. The use of family impact statements could change that. Student Researcher Bekah Muta examines these emerging, "promising" tools in our latest report. Read here: https://lnkd.in/ezw3A_XD

We research, identify, and implement solutions to enhance the lives of children affected by a parent’s incarceration.
关于我们
Children of Incarcerated Caregivers (CIC) is a non-profit devoted to promoting the best interests of children when their parents are sentenced to prison or otherwise involved in the criminal justice system. We work to support legal and policy changes and innovative programs based on research to advance the welfare of children. Our family program brings free summer camps and enrichment opportunities to youth who have been affected by a parent’s incarceration — past or present. To further our vision and mission, we provide undergraduate, graduate, and law students with career-advancing internship opportunities while advocating for real legal and policy change in the lives of Minnesota children.

In Argentina, the number of children living in prisons with their mothers has significantly decreased in the past few years as home arrest has become an increasingly popular alternative to incarceration for pregnant women and mothers. However challenges persist for mothers who care for their children while confined to their homes. She is a professor of International Health Policy and Practice and vice president for Research, Innovation, and Impact at the South East Technological University in Ireland. She has been research active for over 20 years in the field of law, health inequalities, and human rights of marginalized populations (people in prison, people who use drugs, women affected by gender-based violence, migrants, and refugees). Professor Van Hout consults regularly as an independent evaluation consultant or substantive expert for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the Council of Europe Pompidou Group, and the World Health Organization in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Join CIC and Columbia Journal of Gender and Law for our second prison nursery symposium on Friday, November 1. It’s been estimated that 19,000 children are living with one of their incarcerated parents in nearly every country in the world. However, due to the lack of official and reliable data, the actual number may be much higher. This one-day, hybrid event will bring together academics, NGOs, policymakers, and impacted people to examine and discuss prison nurseries, including gaps in research and nursery placement processes that fail to consider children’s best interests. We invite anyone who seeks to support children of incarcerated caregivers to come learn with us, especially law students, district attorneys, defense lawyers, judges, and impacted people. Since CIC was founded in 2015,?student researchers from several schools in Minnesota and other states have shaped the trajectory of our work. Students research issues like prison nurseries and alternatives to incarceration for parents, and gain skills and knowledge to advocate for positive social change in their future careers. Meet Anthony Pimentel, one of our outstanding researchers from UC Irvine School of Law, in our September newsletter. https://lnkd.in/eSg_ggzu
