CIATTI Company - November 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? The Northern Hemisphere harvests are now complete and all appear to have come in below their five-year averages, with France (-17%) leading the estimated shortfalls in Europe ahead of Italy (-12.8%) and Spain (-4.7%). California’s 2024 harvest remains hard to quantify; our guesstimate remains 3.2-3.3 million tons, below the five-year average of 3.5 million tons. That said, this month there are calls to action on a number of wines, including specific Italian appellations and white wines in South Africa and Chile. Particularly on varietal and generic white wines, lower pricing would likely unlock more transactions. Plenty of pricing opportunities do exist: for example, this month we cite Californian supply (generic through to high-end), high-end Chilean reds, southern French Pinot Grigio (competitively priced versus Italy’s), and 2023 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. As ever, Ciatti will be on hand at the World Bulk Wine Exhibition – in Amsterdam on the 25-26th November – with the very latest opportunities for buyers and suppliers alike. CIATTI Company - October 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? Australia’s bulk market remains slow while the international focus is on the Northern Hemisphere harvests and China works through the wines it secured earlier this year. Frosts have caused widespread damage in the vineyards of South Australia and New South Wales, exacerbated by a dry winter and early budburst in some areas. The value and volume of New Zealand’s wine exports declined in the 12 months to June 2024, as a better January-June period struggled to offset a large decline in the second half of 2024; leading markets the US, UK and Australia have been buying less volume. CIATTI Company - September 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? The Northern Hemisphere crops are now well underway and the early suspicion is that most if not all will come in average-sized as best. This is due to climatic but also market factors, with vineyard economising and removals – and some grapes going unpicked – in response to slow grape and bulk wine markets. As this month’s Italy page states: “Over the next few years, the industry will undergo a reset, losing vineyard area and businesses, and emerging on the other side more profitable.” Australia’s bulk market has been quiet, as is typical for the time of year. With the Northern Hemisphere mid-harvest, demand from Europe and North America has softened as the new intake there gets analysed and/or excess supplied dealt with. Many sellers in Australia are currently seeing a slowdown in shipments to China as the supply pipeline has been filled, but they remain hopeful that more wine will be needed in the lead-up to Chinese New Year on 29th January. CIATTI Company - August 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? Buyers around the world have been continuing to contract volumes conservatively, wary of increased costs, fragile consumer spending and changing habits, and a lack of demand pressure from retailers and distributors who in some markets at least still appear to be destocking. For those buyers able to identify areas of potential sales growth, there is bulk availability lowered in price that represents a highly attractive price-quality opportunity. Cold and dry conditions have continued through Australia’s winter and growers hope to see more rainfall in the latter part of the season to mitigate the frost risk in spring. The bulk market has slowed since the initial purchasing rush by Chinese buyers in April and May that followed the removal of China’s punitive import tariffs on Australian wines. The number of small-batch, mid-range and premium red wine enquiries remains consistent. The latest Wine Australia Export Report shows that the value of Australia’s wine exports increased by 17% to AUD2.2 billion in the 12 months to 30th June (Australia’s financial year). The value growth was due to an increase in exports to China, with importers restocking after the tariff removal at the end of March. CIATTI Company - July 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? The global bulk wine market was largely quiet over the past month, with only Chile and Spain reporting steady activity. An uptick in buyer enquiries has continued in California, potentially due to prices softening as the new crop nears, but only some of this activity has so far translated into deals. The challenging market has opened up attractive one-year and multi-year opportunities on a wide range of quality wines for bulk and mid-tier programmes, from standard red and white varietals through to items such as declassified highend French rosé, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, even cachet Coastal California appellations. Bulk wine market activity has recently slowed in Australia following the initial purchasing rush triggered by China’s removal. Entry-level red wines including Shiraz, Cabernet, Merlot and Dry Red are still being requested but to a lesser extent. There has been an uptick in enquiries for small lots of mid-range and premium reds, with a number of domestic buyers seeking packaged container volumes of red wine, namely Barossa Valley Shiraz and Coonawarra Cabernet. CIATTI Company - June 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? The global bulk wine market reaches the midway point of 2024 with activity levels healthier than they were at the same stage of last year. This is owed largely to two factors: generic white wine is in something of a supply-demand balance, globally-speaking, following the short 2023 harvests in Italy and Spain and 2024 harvests in Chile and South Africa; and removal, in March, of China’s punitive import tariffs on Australian wines has quickly rejuvenated Australia’s red wine shipments. Australia’s bulk wine market has been experiencing positive activity levels, with large volumes of red wine – Dry Red, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – having been allocated by a number of Chinese and Australia-based buyers. Entry-level red wine pricing has experienced a sharp increase in the past four weeks as stocks get quickly allocated to Chinese buyers. CIATTI Company - May 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? The “consumption” section of the Organization of Vine & Wine’s recently published ‘State of the World Vine & Wine Sector 2023’. Consumption in 2023 was estimated at 221 million hectolitres, down 2.6% versus 2022 and the lowest level since 1996. Removal of China’s import tariffs on Australian wines boosted demand for entry level Reds, as well as high alcohol (14%+) and high colour wines. Consequently pricing increased notably on 2022 & 2023 red varieties but also on non-vintage, non-varietal material which may allow other supplier countries such as Chile to remain competitive. Chinese demand means some wineries are now fully allocated on certain stocks. Total bulk exports for the 12 months to 31st March were up 1% in volume – thanks to the UK, Canada and Belgium. Crush numbers in New Zealand look to be down 20-25% due to cool spring weather. Pricing on the country’s 2024 Sauvignon Blanc is in the mid NZD4/litre FOB range; bulk 2023 Sauvignon Blanc remains available at competitive pricing. CIATTI Company April 2024 Global Market Report NOW available! ?????????? The bulk market has experienced its second consecutive month of noticeably more normal activity levels following last year’s stark slowness. Much of the activity has been generated by generic white wine and its apparent shortness and/or increases in price in Spain, Italy, Chile and South Africa. The red wine market remains more muted by comparison. The big news for the market came at the end of March, when China – finally – ended its 200%+ tariffs on Australian wine imports, effective from the 29th. China-based and domestic enquiries into Australia’s 2022 and 2023 Dry Red, Shiraz and Cabernet immediately rose; pricing has since started to firm up. This may, in turn, make red wine export prices in other countries appear more attractive by default. In the meantime, read on for detailed updates on each market below ?? CIATTI Company? March 2024 Global Market Report NOW available!? ?????????? The global bulk wine market is heading into the second quarter of the year looking more ‘normal’ than it has done for some months: rather than each market united in slowness, some have seen an uptick – however slight – in activity (Chile and California), some are unable to meet demand on at least some wines due to short harvests and/or limited carryover (Italy and South Africa), and some markets are mainly slow because of buyer perceptions that prices are elevated (Argentina, Italy, Spain). Buyer interest is there, it is simply price and volume-sensitive during what remains a fragile period for the global economy. In the meantime, read on for detailed updates on each market below ??
