    We are approaching the season of family get-togethers, and while they are amazing (of course they are), it’s good to have a diversion or two to break up long days. Let me recommend a Parallel Parking Tournament. I grew up in New York City, where being overconfident about one’s parallel parking prowess was kind of a thing ??♀?. As an analytical thinker who nonetheless shares this overconfidence, I reconciled the two by inventing a tournament to determine whose parallel parking really performs. The tournament rules: Choose a car that all contestants will use. A mid-sized sedan works well. Any tech (e.g. backup camera, automatic parking assist??) must be agreed upon. As in golf, the lower score wins. o??+1 for every back and forth after initial backup. o??+2 for each time hitting the curb. o??+2 for every bump to other cars. o??+5 for using mobile device (no texting while driving). o??+1 for not signaling. o??+3 for parking more than one foot away (either wheel) from curb. o??Crooked Parking points: Measure distance to curb from the middle of front and back tires. The DIFFERENCE in inches between the two measurements are added points. o??Not In The Middle points: Measure distance from front and back bumpers to the adjacent cars. The DIFFERENCE in inches between the two measurements are added points. o??In case of a tie, the quickest time to park wins. This is a hoot of a tournament; fun for everyone, including the spectators. Happy parking! Footnotes: (1) Note that the above is version two of the rules. My first version did not have enough emphasis on aesthetics. I added the “Crooked Parking” and “Not In The Middle” points after a tournament “winner” took the prize with an aesthetically displeasing parking job. I grumbled with my better-looking parking job but silver in my hand, hence the rule changes. (2) Maybe give the car a break between several contestants. We kinda beat up the steering in the Honda in the photo.
