Cooperatives are the foundation and future of American agriculture, says Dan Schurr, who chairs the CHS Board of Directors. "Cooperatives were built on the principle of doing more together than one person can do alone," he says. "This collective strength has powered agriculture for generations and has long been an economic and stewardship engine for rural America. And ag cooperatives are led by the very people who own them: farmers." Schurr owns and manages a family farm near LeClaire, Iowa, raising corn and soybeans. He also operates a commercial trucking business. "Today, because I am part of a co-op connected with CHS, when I send my grain to market, I know I am connected to a world of opportunities - opportunities I wouldn’t have with any other grain buyer. That’s the cooperative difference." Schurr points to investments CHS is making for the future, "in facilities that will serve our farm families for generations and bring quality jobs and economic viability to communities to keep them strong." He adds, "As we look to the future of agriculture, cooperatives are an unwavering and vital part of how we will keep American agriculture and the American farm strong."

We're investing in our grain terminal in Kindred, North Dakota. It’s a significant expansion and upgrade plan for the facility, to further connect local growers to nearby processing plants and the Pacific Northwest export market. “Investing in our Kindred grain terminal is just one example of how CHS is strengthening the grain supply chain by connecting local growers to the global marketplace,” says Rick Dusek, CHS executive vice president, ag retail, distribution and transportation. Upon completion, the facility will have overall capacity of 5.2 million bushels. The Kindred facility provides energy, grain and agronomy at a centralized hub. The site enhancements will increase efficiency and bring area farmers even more market access to the Pacific Northwest grain corridor and important regional markets. After several years of record profits for farmers and agribusinesses, the ag industry is in a down cycle that usually lasts four to five years, says Nelson Neale, president CHS Hedging. He joins the "It Takes a Co-op" podcast sharing insights on the U.S. and ag economies and global trends affecting agriculture. High interest rates and inflation has hurt the U.S. and ag economies. However, Neale says there are signs of improvement. He believes the ag economy is “fairly resilient” regardless of what happens with the U.S. economy. “At the end of the day, the agricultural components that make up products are ultimately still there.” Listen to the full conversation here: https://bit.ly/3YPqN5G.

The CHS engineering rotational program is equipping new engineers with technical skills and developing talent for future engineering and operations roles at CHS. The 24-month program offers hands-on experience at CHS processing facilities and grain terminals. “Each rotation brings new challenges and learning opportunities, shaping our engineering interns into well-rounded professionals ready to tackle the complexities of the processing industry," says Sheila Wheeler, an engineer based at the Mankato Minn., processing facility who manages the program. "Through their experiences, we hope participants see the importance of continuous learning and adaption in the ever-evolving field of engineering."

Shannon Forster, a farmer and cooperative owner, joins the "It Takes a Co-op" podcast to talk about her involvement with the cooperative system and how she sees cooperatives evolving. "I don't think that evolution is going to start in the boardroom," says Forster. "I think that the future of the cooperative system is the future of the American farmer, so I think those conversations need to start at the farm." "As we say [at CHS], 'Creating connections to empower agriculture,' that's something that runs deep," she says. "I've traveled overseas. I've met with CHS partners in different countries. The biggest part is the connection to other farmers." Learn more about Forster and why she finds value in the cooperative system: https://bit.ly/3Y6NW3e.

October is National Co-op Month. In the cooperative system and at CHS, “We are going to come together, we’re going to serve our owners, serve our patrons, provide them with the products and services they need. And at the end of the year when we’ve made money doing that, we’re going to give it back to them,” says Evan Fust, senior director of operations for CHS High Plains based in Yuma, Colo., and CHS United Plains Ag based in Sharon Springs, Kan. Fust describes the role cooperatives play in communities across rural America and why he believes in the cooperative system. #CoopMonth
