Recent severe weather and flooding around Greater Houston hasn’t just damaged homes and businesses, it has also significantly affected the oyster crop in Galveston Bay and elsewhere along the Texas coast. Oysters thrive in brackish water — a mixture of salt and fresh water. When floodwater runoff heads downstream into the bay, it greatly skews that balance in favor of fresh water, and oysters struggle to survive.
