The Gene Editing Institute explores the potential of CRISPR-directed gene editing for application in oncology and inherited disease. We focus on bringing innovative research from bench to bedside by using CRISPR-directed gene editing to mitigate the failure of standard cancer care. We're excited to announce that Eric B. Kmiec will be speaking at the Cell and Gene Therapy conference hosted by Technology Networks on March 19-20! He'll be discussing the latest breakthroughs in the field and what challenges we still see across the gene editing landscape. We're honored to see him speaking alongside our colleagues in the field on these important topics, and we hope to see you there!

We were so happy to have Jayme Simlin Del Mario visit our lab last week! Jayme comes to us from IDEA Public Schools, where she serves as the CTE Biomedical Science Curriculum Manager. When she heard about CRISPR in a Box, she saw an opportunity to bring this novel bioscience to teachers in her school district and hopped on a plane to Delaware to learn it first-hand! We guided her through the experimental protocol, showed her a typical Learning Lab, and learned valuable skills on curriculum formation and CTE planning that you can only learn from someone with expertise in the field. We're so proud to keep sharing our CRISPR educational tools with more and more teachers, allowing this science to reach more and more students. This field only succeeds when we know we're training the next generation of scientists, and with Jayme rolling out this training in March for over 100 schools, we're confident that the field is progressing just fine. Our scientists will be hosting a workshop on building confidence in teaching novel biotechnology to students - science that's barely a decade old, like CRISPR and genomic medicine. Let's go round two! CRISPR in a Box is currently in the running for the Coolest Thing Made in Delaware for the second year in a row. Why should you vote for us? ?? Innovation: This kit is our pathway to bringing new perspectives into our lab. Students using this kit ask real questions about the future of healthcare, and they get their answers from scientists actively shaping that future. ?? Student impact: This box has been in the hands of hundreds of students across the state and beyond. We've already had reports of students shifting their career focus over to medicine and biotechnology after participating in this lab, showing the tangible impact this lesson has on students. ?? Discovery: As we change and mold this lesson to suit students from different backgrounds, we're learning more about the technology itself. By teaching students, we teach ourselves, and that helps everyone, from patient to participant. We're excited to see this box nominated again, and we hope to go even further this year!
