In recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month, we continue to emphasize the critical importance of listening to adoptees' voices to inform our work. Too often, adoptees are expected to express gratitude while avoiding difficult conversations. However, understanding and embracing their full stories—both the challenges and triumphs—is essential to building lasting, meaningful connections. Our newest blog features insights from Cameron Lee Small, MS, LPCC, an adoptee, author, and therapist, who explores the complex dynamics of adoption through both a personal and professional lens. This piece provides valuable guidance on how to encourage caregivers to honor an adoptee’s full narrative, even when it’s uncomfortable. As professionals, we have a responsibility to elevate the voices of those with lived experience and encourage families to lean into difficult conversations, even when emotions are stirred.
