Important reading from?JAMA Network Open?on the impacts of #nurseburnout, featuring some research from CHOPR’s own studies. This meta-analysis by Dr. Shanafelt’s team at Stanford affirms what our work has shown: nurse burnout is strongly associated with reduced patient safety, satisfaction, and healthcare quality. As the front line of patient care, nurses need environments that support well-being and resilience. At CHOPR, we’ve seen how systems-level improvements—adequate staffing, healthy work cultures, and meaningful resources—can transform outcomes for both patients and nurses. The data is clear: addressing nurse burnout isn’t just beneficial for nurses; it’s essential for safe, high-quality patient care. #NurseBurnout #Nurses4All #CHOPR #NurseWellbeing #PennNursing Matthew McHugh, PhD, JD, MPH, RN

?? New research led by Margo Brooks Carthon and Ann Kutney-Lee highlights the critical role of nurse work environments in reducing COVID-19 mortality among socially vulnerable Medicare beneficiaries. This study found that up to 585 deaths could have been prevented if hospitals had invested in better nursing resources. Read the full-article here: ?https://lnkd.in/erqxDNx7 This underscores the importance of supporting nurses to ensure high-quality care, particularly for those from socially vulnerable communities. As we prepare for future public health emergencies, improving nurse work environments must be a priority for hospital administrators and policymakers. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed disparities in care, especially in Black-serving hospitals. CHOPR Associate Director, Dr. Eileen Lake and colleagues investigated how these inequities affected nurses and patient outcomes.
In their recent study, LDI Fellows Eileen Lake, Connie Ulrich, and colleagues underscore the impact of leadership communication on the moral distress of nurses during COVID-19 in Black-serving hospitals (BSHs). Their findings revealed that nurses in higher BSHs reported more distress than those in lower BSHs, which was linked to inadequate communication from managers & PPE shortages. ??COVID-19 Patient Mortality in the Context of Hospitals Chronically Under-Resourced Nursing Services Dr. Karen Lasater, recently spoke at the HealthWatch USA meeting, discussing the relationship between nurse staffing, nurse work environment, educational and skill mix composition on COVID-19 mortality rates. Watch the full presentation on YouTube to learn more: https://lnkd.in/dq6qv_YZ In her presentation, Dr. Lasater delves into findings from newly published research in the International Journal of Nursing Studies: ‘Hospital nurse staffing variation and Covid-19 deaths: A cross-sectional study’, co-authored with Matthew McHugh, PhD, JD, MPH, RN and Dr. Linda Aiken. The research reveals a stark reality that many Covid-19 deaths could have been avoided if hospitals were better resourcing nurses prior to and during the pandemic. Read the Full Study: https://lnkd.in/dn4BC3rk Preparing for the next public health emergency requires hospitals to staff enough registered nurses and invest in their nursing services during usual times. #NurseStaffing #COVID19 #Nursing #PublicHealth #Nurses4All #UPennNursing #SafeStaffingSavesLives
