A CHOP Research Institute Center dedicated to discovering and sharing knowledge about best practices in pediatric care.
关于我们
Clinical Futures is powering progress in pediatric care. The mission of Clinical Futures is to utilize innovative methods to create, translate, and disseminate epidemiological, health services, and clinical research-based evidence and interventions that improve children’s health and family wellbeing. Director Alex Fiks, MD, MSCE, leads a team of core faculty members who are general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists, along with a staff of public health experts, research assistants, research associates, data analysts, and research administrators. This dynamic multidisciplinary team of experts collaborates to advance methods to improve pediatric health outcomes. To promote clinical effectiveness research at CHOP, the center: ? Mentors fellows and young faculty ? Provides resources including pilot grants, grant writing services, and data services ? Educates our researchers in the methods of clinical effectiveness ? Disseminates knowledge gained from research findings ? Partners with other groups and Centers of Emphasis at CHOP to implement best practices to improve the quality of care delivered to our patients Our work focuses on six methodological pillars to promote clinical effectiveness research at CHOP: ? Biostatistics ? Clinical Epidemiology ? Clinical Trials ? Comparative Effectiveness ? Implementation Science ? Social Science Methods In Healthcare Delivery (Mixed-Methods) These pillars and our work are guided by a strategic plan, which outlines our vision and goals of progressing clinical effectiveness research into the future of pediatric care. We’re increasing our capacity to strengthen our center and serve patients and their families. On this #RecentResearchWednesday we are highlighting three recent publications from our Clinical Futures experts highlighting their efforts to advance pediatric healthcare both at home and aboard! Dr. Jeffrey Gerber and colleagues compared clinical outcomes of two antibiotic therapies for pediatric patients to inform appropriate discharge management strategies for children with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremic osteomyelitis. They found that children who transitioned to discharge oral antibiotic therapy had similar treatment success to those discharged on outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT). They concluded that the use of discharge oral antibiotic therapy is reasonable for select patients with (MRSA) bacteremic osteomyelitis, which can help patients lower medical costs, improve quality of life and avoid catheter-related complications. Read more about this work here: https://bit.ly/4fSrAtm Researchers, including Dr. Pamela Weiss, conducted a study to uncover the impact of chronic opioid use for pain management on children with both inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and arthritis. Researchers examined data of emergency department visits and hospitalizations for patients with IBD and arthritis who were categorized as chronic opioid users. The study pointed to a correlation between chronic opioid use and an increase in acute health utilizations. Dr. Weiss and her colleagues recommend further studies to examine if a transition to non-opioid therapy for pain control would decrease acute healthcare costs for this patient group. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3YZRWTh Dr. Gregory Tasian participated in the development of strategies and innovations to address Hyperoxaluria during the 14th International Hyperoxaluria Workshop. The workshop brought together international experts to discuss the causes of primary and enteric Hyperoxaluria, which can lead to complications such as kidney stones or kidney failure. Dr. Tasian shared his expertise on the clinical and ethical challenges for treatment of Hyperoxaluria and participated in discussions prioritizing the discovery of novel clinical approaches to address patient needs. Researchers from PolicyLab at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and #ClinicalFutures are studying school-based Organizational Skills Training (OST), a new approach to behavioral skills intervention for children who exhibit certain skill deficiencies. Study findings should that participation in the school-based OST resulted in immediate and short-term improvement in homework performance and, for some students, improved academic performance. Learn more in the video below. Also, read more on the Research in Practice blog here: https://lnkd.in/eHjuuBhh.
Organization, time management, and planning skills are strongly connected to a child’s academic progress. But some students struggle to develop these skills, even when they get support from teachers. New research shows that educators—who have been coached to use an intervention program—can deliver trainings to elementary school students that improve their organization, time management skills and homework performance. These results highlight an intervention that schools can deliver to support students’ academic performance and their future success. Check the comments for this new article in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

New on the Blog: Inpatient subspecialty consultations are influenced by more than just clinical need, but why? Hospital Pediatrics recently published a new investigation of this topic by Julie Szymczak, PhD; Jeffrey Gerber, MD, PhD; Chris Bonafide, MD, MSCE, and their colleagues. They found that efforts to reduce low-value consultation must consider social and organizational dynamics that promote consultation, including clinicians’ perceived competence, family expectations, clinical pathways, medicolegal risk, and more. We’ve summarized their work in this Research in Practice post. ?? ? https://lnkd.in/eYTbR6Y6
