I am deeply moved by this powerful story shared by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. It highlights the critical importance of inclusive care and the profound impact of understanding and supporting the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community, especially during end-of-life situations. As a professional dedicated to compassionate care, I believe that every individual deserves to have their wishes respected and honored, regardless of their marital status or sexual orientation. The Visiting Nurse Association of Texas' proactive approach in this case is a testament to the progress we are making towards equitable care for all. Let's continue to advocate for and implement policies that ensure every patient feels seen, heard, and valued. This story is a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. #PrideMonth #InclusiveCare #EndOfLifeCare #LGBTQ+ #CompassionateCare #Hospice #PalliativeCare
As part of our #PrideMonth series, we are sharing a patient care story from Visiting Nurse Association of Texas, demonstrating how the team met the needs of a member of the LGBTQ+ community.? “We took care of a sweet, middle-aged cancer patient on hospice who was not yet formally married to his partner of over ten years. He was unable to sign his own forms, including his out-of-hospital do-not-resuscitate document. He wanted his partner to sign but thought that because they were not married with formalities, his partner could not sign. This broke his heart that his partner could not sign these end-of-life documents that were so important to him. He was very upset, which made the illness even harder. We spoke with our in-house attorney, who reached out to another attorney in Dallas for advice. [We learned that] if the couple agreed to be married and after the agreement, they lived together in Texas and represented to the community, friends, and church, among others...that they were married, they were in a common-law marriage and VNA would accept the partner's execution of the advance directives. This became part of VNA's policies regarding LGBTQ+ patients in our care.”?

Over the past 25+ years I have worked with families and dying patients from all walks of life, cultures, and colors. The service of showing up for the elderly and terminally ill with education, compassionate support, and guidance to navigate the path to the best possible ending continues to inspire my life: more now than ever. It is with great honour to teach and usher in a new era of skilled Elder and End of Life Doulas and to have the wisdom of our guest instructors in this 12 week journey together. It is my belief that whether we receive end of life education or not we are all called to show up for ourselves and our loved ones in the end of life process. I have found that death is as miraculous as birth when we allow for this, prepare, and give voice and dignity to the dying. Join us for this 12 week journey (no experience required) to better understand elder care management, natural death care, and all of the various ways that doulas are finding their niche in the world to come alongside others through aging, death, and dying. https://lnkd.in/dSUYGCFB

What is hospice? When do I call hospice? We frequently receive these questions... so we put together a short and sweet Hospice 101 guide to give you a better understanding of what to expect and how to plan. If you're considering hospice care for yourself or a loved one, it's important to discuss this decision with the primary care physician or healthcare team. They can provide guidance on whether hospice is appropriate given the specific medical circumstances and can help coordinate the transition to hospice services.
