Happy Earth Day from CHiPS! This Earth Day, we're highlighting our composting program. Serving over 500 meals a day can make a lot of food waste: we produce between five and six brown city bins every single week (that's over 100 gallons of waste!). Each week, a couple of those bins go across the street to the Greenspace on 4th community garden. There, one of our volunteers (and compost aficionado), Mark Hellerman, turns our food waste into nutrient rich soil. The rest of our food waste gets picked up once a week by the city sanitation department and is turned into biogas. Swipe to learn more about compost @ CHiPS.

关于我们
CHiPS is a privately funded 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1971 and generously supported by a community of Brooklyn neighbors, volunteers, and friends who share a common vision to help those less fortunate. April is National Volunteer Month. We kicked off the month last week with our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Party, but our appreciation doesn't end there. Since 1971, volunteers have been at the core of what we do. CHiPS was founded by volunteers and entirely run by volunteers for at least its first 15 years of existence. Today, volunteers continue to play a crucial role: In 2024, our volunteers contributed 38,000 hours. At $25/hour, that amounts to $950,000 worth of labor. That's a whopping 33% of our budget! And in 2024, those hours contributed to 192,000 meals, 25,000 pantry bags, and countless acts of support and kindness, all within our community of volunteers, guests, residents, and staff. Join our volunteers & make a difference in 2025.

Last week, the US Department of Agriculture cut $1B in funding that brought local food to schools and food banks. This week, the USDA continues to cut millions of dollars of funding that food banks across the country rely on. Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, claims that the USDA is only cutting "nonessential" programs. Access to healthy food is and always will be essential. We are here to say that food is a human right. Support your local community food access organizations. Volunteer, give, organize. https://lnkd.in/e4s7v582
