关于我们
The Chinese Historical Society of America Museum is the oldest organization in the country dedicated to the interpretation, promotion, and preservation of the social, cultural and political history and contributions of the Chinese in America. When founded in 1963, there were fewer than 250,000 people of Chinese descent living in the US and CHSA was a lone voice for the study and dissemination of the history of this segment of the US population. Today, as the number of Chinese in the US has risen to nearly 4 million, CHSA strives to be a responsible steward of the remarkable narrative of this rapidly growing and increasingly visible community. CHSA promotes the contributions and legacy of the Chinese in America through its exhibitions, publications, and educational and public programs in the Museum and Learning Center. We are housed in the landmark Julia Morgan-designed Chinatown YWCA building at 965 Clay Street, San Francisco. We offer tours of the Museum and the surrounding Chinatown community for a nominal charge. We have extended our reach with online content with online exhibits through our main portal chsa.org, sharing information and news through our Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr, and sharing photographs through our Instagram. We have also opened our doors to collaborations with others who want to share their stories and experiences through film screenings, book readings, presentations, workshops, panel discussions and so much more.

Author Traci Huahn's picture book tells the true story of a fight for access to public education by an 8-year-old Chinese American girl, Mamie Tape, and her parents. There were no public schools for Chinese Americans in 1884 in San Francisco when Mamie tried to attend the white school and was turned away. That led her parents to go to court, first at the city level and then with the state. Victories were met with more setbacks. Young readers will realize that court rulings are just one part of any campaign for human rights. As part of CHSA's celebration of Women's History Month, join us for a family day featuring a special presentation with Traci Huahn along with interactive arts and crafts fun for the for kids and adults of all ages. DATE: Saturday, March 15, 2025, 2PM WHERE: CHSA Museum, 965 Clay St., San Francisco Visit CHSA.org.

Fae Myenne Ng’s?ORPHAN BACHELORS?is an extraordinary memoir of her beloved San Francisco’s Chinatown and of a family building a life in a country bent on their exclusion. Fae weaves together the history of one family, lucky to exist and nevertheless doomed; an elegy for brothers estranged and for elders lost; and insights into writing between languages and teaching between generations. It also features Cantonese profanity, snakes that cure fear and opium that conquers sorrow, and a seemingly immortal creep of tortoises. In this powerful remembrance, she gives voice to her valiant ancestors, her bold and ruthless Orphan Bachelors, and her own inner self, howling in Cantonese, impossible to translate but determined to be heard. Join this in-depth conversation with fellow author May-lee Chai, as they discuss the history of orphan bachelors, Chinatown as inspiration, and more. WHEN: Saturday, February 1, 2025, 2PM WHERE: CHSA Museum, 965 Clay St., San Francisco Admission is free. RSVP is requested: https://lnkd.in/e_r-Kh4p
