On October 29th, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a Special Use District for New Asia - a 175 unit senior housing site at 772 and 758 Pacific. The project marks the first 100% affordable senior housing development in Chinatown in over 20 years! The project will also be able to keep most units at rents affordable to extremely low-income or ELI seniors, thanks to Proposition G - a ballot measure that will help subsidize units in several affordable housing projects if passed! Together, we celebrated the heart and soul of Chinatown — the residential village of seniors, families, and immigrants who make our Chinatown a living and breathing vibrant community. Since its founding in 1977, Chinatown CDC has championed affordable housing, safety, and economic development, culminating in the landmark 1986 Chinatown Master Plan. These values continue to make our village a shining model for Chinatowns nationwide, and your support has played a significant role in this achievement. Congratulations to our honorees, each of whom has made a unique and invaluable contribution to our community. The Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr. (Lifetime Achievement Award), the 2024 Iftar Planning Committee (Allan E. Low Super Partner Award), and Hanmin Liu and Jennifer Mei of Wildflowers Institute (Community Angel Award). Another highlight was the Fund-A-Need, raising over $68,000 to restore the Green and Community Spaces, directly benefiting residents across three Chinatown CDC affordable housing properties. Chinatown CDC is a comprehensive community development organization with a mission to build community. Chinatown CDC builds community through bricks and mortar strategies (developing, acquiring and operating over 3,500 units of affordable housing) and people strategies (tenant organizing, community planning and advocacy, youth?leadership development, and residents services). Malcolm graduated from Duke University in 1994 (B.S. Chemistry), University of Colorado at Boulder in 1997 (M.A. History), and Berkeley Law (J.D.) in 2001. Malcolm first practiced in venture finance and in I.P. litigation at Perkins Coie LLP and then O'Melveny and Meyers LLP before joining the Asian Law Caucus in 2003. In 2009, Malcolm joined Chinatown CDC where he has been ever since, except for a brief sabbatical serving as Senior Housing Advisor to San Francisco's First Asian American Mayor, the Honorable Edwin M. Lee. In 2019, Mayor London Breed appointed Malcolm to the San Francisco Airport Commission. Malcolm has previously served as Co-Chair of the California Coalition on Civil Rights and President of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area.
