Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest (CSNW) is currently home to fifteen chimpanzees and four cattle. The first group of chimps, known as the Cle Elum Seven, were released from biomedical research in June, 2008.
Four rescued cattle joined the sanctuary in 2018 from Farm Sanctuary when their Orland, CA shelter closed.
Three more chimpanzees arrived from Wildlife Waystation in 2019 after their announced closure. Another group of six chimpanzees, dubbed the Lucky Six, arrived on June 26, 2021, following a major building expansion.
We love to share stories, videos and photos illustrating the individual personalities of those in our care on our website and blog (ChimpsNW.org/blog).
The sanctuary is located on 90 acres of farm and forested land at the base of the Cascade Mountains 90 miles east of Seattle. CSNW is one of only a handful of sanctuaries in the country that cares for chimpanzees.
The sanctuary was one of the first primate sanctuaries to receive accreditation under the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and is a founding member of the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA).
Our mission is to provide lifetime quality care for chimpanzees and work to educate the public about the plight of primates worldwide.
