More space + more kids = more impact! ?? The new ChildServe - Des Moines facility will consist of renovating a recently acquired building at 1750 48th Street, expediting the project timeline to serve more children, sooner. This ChildServe location will more than double the square footage of the current Des Moines center, from 9,000 square feet to over 20,000 square feet, increasing the capacity of children served tenfold – from 60 to 600. ChildServe’s Johnston location will remain the organization’s headquarter campus. "We're incredibly excited about the next steps in our regional growth strategy to transform even more lives through specialty pediatric healthcare services," said Dr. Teri Wahlig, ChildServe CEO. "The facility will improve access and decrease barriers to care for children with special healthcare needs through several of our specialized programs, including pediatric rehabilitation, autism services, medical childcare and neurobehavioral healthcare." Sharing our mission with passionate students has to be one of our favorite things to do! ?? Last month, students from the Des Moines University Doctor of Occupational Therapy program visited with experts at ChildServe and learned all about our specialty pediatric occupational therapy services. Students heard from ChildServe Rehab Manager Abbie Green and Occupational Therapy Clinical Team Lead Ashley Jobe. Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) at ChildServe go above and beyond to provide outstanding care to kids and young adults in our group homes. During #DirectSupportProfessionalsWeek, we recognized several outstanding team members who have made an impact for many over this past year. ?? James Kyambadde is a DSP and was recognized as one of ChildServe's Outstanding Direct Support Professionals of the Year. He was nominated by one of his colleagues who wrote: "James goes the extra mile to ensure each individual is cared for. James will pick up shifts across many of the Homes, providing the same high level of care no matter which locatin or individual he is supporting. James knows the needs of each individual he works with and knows exactly how to interact with them. Supervisors have observed James working with individuals with higher sensory needs, providing the individuals with the input they need. Whether that is sitting right next to them, providing calming words and encouragement, or giving them a supportive hug. He has great relationships with his team members allowing for a welcoming and calm environment for individuals at the Home." We love seeing kids make progress during therapy! ChildServe has 18 Level 1 and 9 Level 2 therapists specially trained in Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI). DMI uses specific neurorehabilitation principles to create new connections in the brain to help children with developmental milestones. ?? At ChildServe, children participate in intensives that use DMI Therapy techniques where therapists use specific dynamic exercises to provoke a motor response from the child. This helps address gross motor skills to improve functional movements, range of motion, balance, strength, posture and alignment.
