Children's Institute believes in the abundant potential of all children, families and communities.
关于我们
Children's Institute was founded in 1906 and has been serving the Los Angeles community for more than 100 years. Children's Institute works primarily in communities impacted by decades of underinvestment including Echo Park, Watts, Compton, and Long Beach. Children's Institute supports 30,000 children and families annually in achieving emotional well-being and educational success, which build pathways to economic mobility and lifelong health. Our highly qualified and compassionate teachers, therapists, and care coordinators are the cornerstone of our work. We are fortunate to witness the many wins that families experience through our programs and services, from the "aha"! moments in the classroom to the breakthroughs in counseling sessions. It would not be possible without the care and expertise staff bring to their roles and the confidence they inspire in the people they support. Each year, International Literacy Day (ILD) is celebrated around the world on September 8. This started in 1967 by UNESCO as a way to remind policymakers, practitioners and the public of the critical importance of literacy for creating a more literate, equitable and peaceful society. According to UNESCO, literacy is a fundamental human right for all people and it opens doors of opportunities and is foundational for people to acquire knowledge, skills, values and behaviors to foster a culture of lasting peace. In honor of International Literacy Day, we are sharing the Los Angeles Times' Back-to-School Literacy Guide - please read, share and enjoy!

At the recent ClarityCon, a conference organized by the Clarity Child Guidance Center our Senior Clinical Supervisor for Behavioral Health & Wellness, Rosette Lee, Psy.D., had the opportunity to lead a session on the role of early childhood mental health. In her session, she focused on the impact of secure attachments, positive parenting and early interventions for a child’s long-term development, health and psychological well-being. The highlights of her session included: 1)?????Highlighting the importance of early childhood relationships and mental health 2)?????Understanding the impact of early childhood trauma 3)?????Raising awareness of protective factors and best practices in treating young children affected by toxic stress, trauma and ACEs We’re proud of Rosette Lee, Psy.D. and are excited to hear about how her session has helped educate & inform fellow clinicians with their work. Just whole healthcare executive scaling health equity through field-defining business, policy and service integration strategy
While canvassing communities is usually an election tactic, what if we went door to door asking people what they need to be healthy and happy? That's what this amazing experiment in South LA aims to find out. Implemented by JWC client Children's Institute under CEO Martine Singer thanks to Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH) funding, teams of community health workers (CHW's) knock on all doors in a catchment area asking people what they need. And guess what they find? Connection. Caring. Mental health services. One case in this great Los Angeles Times piece is telling - a woman unable to leave her home due to anxiety (possibly triggered by a fear of crowds). If the workers hadn't been there, no one would have known. She'd remain alone and untreated. The lady also shares "about speed bumps she wanted the city to install on her block..(that) her husband had died and one of her sons had been killed. That she used to go out dancing, but not anymore." These are real traumas revealed, with social buffers of toxic stress clearly lost when cycles of trauma and mental illness haven't been addressed. One could already calculate her elevated risk of dying early AND the cost to US healthcare from get preventable emergency room and hospital visits for lack of treatment. (I hope CII and company do to showcase the program's true value!) Mistrust is also notable in these communities who are "heavily surveyed" but experience limited follow-up. So much so, one man grows angry, asking the CHW's, “Isn’t it obvious what the community needs?" It's not something most of us would expect CHW's to be able to fairly answer at the perhaps implied policy or systems level. Certainly not if hired today for this program, while others from prior programs that went under are far far away in other jobs. (I know enough of them, trust me.) LA DPH Director Barbara Ferrer acknowledges the program hinges on building trust "very quickly" by getting people help. Problem being, neither trust nor healthcare are quickly or easily secured, even among the best CBO's in LA. CII and partners may get there. I do have hope DPH, CII, Providence, and others will sufficiently leverage CalAIM, EPT and Behavioral Health Transformation, among other massive Medi-Cal investments in seamless, equitable, whole-person care, BEFORE public health funds run out. If not this will become another classic, well-meant public health investment doomed to the dustbins. Perhaps that's the real experiment here - can DPH and partners successfully pursue Medi-Cal financing for nearly the exact services they're offering, from the outset of good care? Or will these community teams stay siloed from healthcare, on that famed road paved with good intentions...? #mentalhealthishealth. #publichealth sustainability planning is key to #healthequity. https://lnkd.in/ehYUz4Tj
These L.A. health teams go door to door with a question: What do you need?

Happy Monday! BEU Savills had the honor of collaborating with the Children's Institute at Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School for an amazing back-to-school supply drive. I’m excited to share that in our 2nd annual BEU Savills Back to School Drive, we were pleased to return to the school and collaborate on providing school supplies. Huge kudos to Robin Leach for orchestrating the drop-off and continuing this wonderful partnership with BEU Savills. A special shoutout to all our wonderful colleagues who donated and made this drive a huge success. It’s amazing to see how our team from both the WLA and DTLA offices united to make this happen. I’d also like to recognize our incredible philanthropy committee members David LeRoy Morrison and Tavar Blake who worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this initiative. A big thank you to Ana Erickson, our dedicated chairperson, for her leadership and guidance throughout this process. It’s been an absolute joy to work with my LA team on this BEU initiative. Thanks to your efforts, we've been able to provide essential supplies to teachers and students, helping them kick off the school year with everything they need. #BEUInitiative #Savills #SavillsNA #BackToSchoolDrive #Teamwork #CommunityFirst #School #BEU
