We know that young people are deeply invested in their pursuit of liberation, bringing expansive, joyful, and creative energy into their work. However, this often shrinks when typical grant structures with stringent rules are imposed before they get funded for the important work they are leading in their communities. Watch to see how #What’s Possible challenges the philanthropy/donor sector to reimagine a better and more intentional relationship with young people! ?? On October 8th, we're holding story time with the Children's Rights Innovation Fund (CRIF), to showcase their book The Tiny Cave and the Magnificent Creatures, which gives visual form and whimsy to lessons with liberatory participatory grant making. Register here: https://buff.ly/3MSWCF8 *** Did you hear about the girl from the abundant forest who went inside the Tiny Cave? Was she able to carry her song with her? Can the wildflower seeds in her pocket grow inside the Tiny Cave? Who lives in the cave? What do their hearts sing for? Do they know about the abundant forest that thrives outside the cave? What's possible... when they create together? *** About The Tiny Cave and the Magnificent Creatures: When we gather with child and youth activists to dream, we marvel at the expansiveness, audacity, and irrationality of their dreams. However, once we attempt to bring those conversations under the framework of “projects”, “grants”, or “funding”, the imaginary spaces for liberation seem to narrow as they assume the pressure to “get it right” and “be professional”. We are often saddened and sometimes frustrated by the reality that we can only access the most oppressively rational languages and possibilities in this atmosphere. The atmosphere also told us something - those of us that call ourselves donors, advocates, program officers, and professionals in this space have created, learned to live in, and continued to carry forward the legacy of some of the tiniest of caves, the narrowest of possibilities. Through our programs, funding, and advocacy, we may be relegating young people’s dreams to these tiny caves. This book created in the format most recognizable to children, is CRIF’s effort to break something to communicate in an ‘irrational’ way– the world we would like to create together with our young folks. "The Tiny Cave and the Magnificent Creatures" is a beautiful storybook written by the Children’s Rights Innovation Fund (CRIF) to give language to what they have learned from their experiments with liberatory participatory grantmaking with youth across various regions in the world. The session will feature a reading of the storybook followed by a highly participatory, small and large group exploration of your responses to key themes from the book. Story Time: Inside the Tiny Cave of Child Protection Work Date: Tuesday, October 8, 2024 Time: 10-11:30am EST Via Zoom

We are thrilled to be a part of this journey with Children's Rights Innovation Fund (CRIF), donor collaborators, and youth collaborators. ? Submit a proposal for the What's Possible fund till September 24th: https://lnkd.in/g5mycsq6
We know to be true that young people’s expansive, joyful, and creative work often shrinks when a ‘project’, ‘plan’ or worse yet, typical grant structures are introduced. The space for possibilities reduces as youth activists work to ‘get it right’ and to be ‘professional’. Child and youth-focused donors increasingly recognise the importance of ‘shifting power’ to young people, decolonising their strategies, and transforming top-down adult-centric grantmaking. In Accra, this February, we brought together practitioners from across the globe to learn in community and in real time with each other, and to explore ceding power to child and youth activists they had yet to meet. Rather than produce a strategy for a fund they had already committed to, they set a collective intention to liberate the fund from the adultism and thematic silos that typically characterise our sector. They then wrote a Donor Intentions Letter with their commitments to the youth collaborators who will go on to design the grantmaking strategy and call for proposals that CRIF and the donor collaborators will follow and learn from. By pooling resources and ceding power to youth working to advance their rights, donors will move money collaboratively in ways that respond to the urgency that youth need and deserve. ??Read their letter here: https://lnkd.in/dHMWDn9z “As we collectively launched this work in collaboration with CRIF, we remembered that at the core of our collective humanity is our care for one another, trust in our collective power, and ability to find joy even in our darkest times.” - Donor Collaborators Purposeful African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) Disability Rights Fund Echidna Giving Elevate Children Funders Group EngenderHealth Fondation Botnar Girls First Fund Global Fund for Children Global Fund for Women William and Flora Hewlett Foundation Ignite Philanthropy Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawai'i, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky
