RJ’s parents have dreams for him that are as boundless as his spirit. They hope he’ll walk and maybe even say a few words soon. The True Grit Spinal Cord Injury (TG SCI) program is a post-acute, community-based, rehabilitation program that aims to provide hope, healing, and inspiration to adolescents and young adults aged 16-21 with SCI. As a collaborative effort between Rutgers University and RWJ Barnabas Health Children’s Specialized Hospital (CSH), the long-term goal of the TG SCI program is to develop a comprehensive community reintegration pathway for young adults with SCI, supporting them throughout the transition to adulthood by single day events, community building, and a residential summer camp each year. This #WorldPrematurityDay, we're spotlighting Penelope and all the obstacles she's already overcome in just a few months! ?? Her mom, Amy, gave birth to Penelope at 29 weeks. Penelope spent the first five and a half months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital. Once she was stable enough to be discharged, she was transferred to the Children's Specialized Hospital Infant and Toddler Rehabilitation Program in New Brunswick, where she received daily therapy. After about two months in inpatient rehabilitation, Penelope was ready to head home. She was able to visually track the objects in occupational therapy, look at her therapist and/or her parents' faces, and start to "coo." Penelope also went from disliking her baths to baths becoming her favorite activity, making her very calm and attentive. To continue to make strides in the right direction, Penelope started outpatient occupational therapy at Children's Specialized Hospital in Toms River. "We're taking it one day at a time, but Penelope has been giving 150% at all her appointments. She's been doing so good so far. She's hitting milestones and heading in the right direction." We celebrated World Kindness Day ???? This past Wednesday, our New Brunswick inpatient facility designated our Therapy Garden as a “Kindness Zone." Our staff, patients and their families used sidewalk chalk to draw pictures and write messages to express what kindness means.
