Last week, we joined over 40 civil society organizations in a meeting with the White House Domestic Policy Council to demand action that upholds international human rights treaties. ? Our own Shereen White, alongside Joyce McMillan and Angela Olivia Burton, highlighted the urgency of protecting the sanctity of family bonds. Every 3 minutes, a child is separated from their family and placed in the foster system—disproportionately impacting Black, Indigenous, Latine, LGBTQ+ youth, and children with disabilities. ? As Shereen Arthur White, Director of Advocacy & Policy at Children’s Rights, powerfully stated, "I just want to pause and remind us why we are here. All of this is about real people, about human beings, children, parents, families. They deserve so much better, and until every last one of them is celebrating freedom from state violence, our fight must continue. Family integrity is a fundamental human right that must be protected, ensuring that every child grows up in the care of their loved ones and every family has the strength and support to stay whole." ? We are calling for a Presidential Commission, led by those directly impacted and community leaders - people who understand firsthand how federal laws affect real families - to confront the structural racism and deeply flawed legal foundations of the system. ? The U.S. has an obligation to the children, parents, and families who deserve better. The Administration must act swiftly and center the voices of those who know the way forward.

I joined U.S. civil society members in a much-awaited meeting with the White House Domestic Policy Council and federal agencies to urge action consistent with U.S treaty obligations under international law. Far too many children and families—especially those from Black, Brown, LGBTQ+, and disabled communities—are harmed by outdated laws and punitive systems that fuel family separation. I called for the establishment of a Presidential Commission to examine the structural racism embedded in the U.S. child welfare system and the federal laws that perpetuate these injustices. Every child deserves to grow up in the care of their loved ones, and we must act with the urgency this moment demands. Special thanks to Jamil Dakwar and Lisa Borden for their tireless efforts and making this meeting happen! Children's Rights Joyce McMillan Angela Olivia Burton Stevie Glaberson

Nine Voices. Nine stories. One urgent call for change. In the coming months, you'll meet them—Ashley, Alyssa, Jimmy, Kris, Crystal, Jordan, KhiMarria, Jacqueline, and Ruby—nine people who bravely share their experiences in state foster systems. Their stories expose the harsh realities of a child welfare system that claims to protect kids, yet too often separates them from their families only to place them in environments where they are abused and neglected. Their words challenge us all: Is This How We Treat Kids? Let's raise our voices loud and advocate for better treatment of our children. Stay tuned for more: https://lnkd.in/eVf8M3KP

Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, we stand together to shed light on a struggle too often faced in silence. To anyone who needs to hear it—you are not alone. In 2023, 20% of high school students seriously considered attempting suicide. That's 1 out of every 5 students. Mental health care should be proactive, accessible, and affordable for all, especially for young people. We must provide support before a crisis unfolds, offering care tailored to their needs. We all have a part in creating a compassionate, supportive environment for one another. Take a moment to check in with your loved ones—and don't forget to check in with yourself, too. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. There is no shame in reaching out.
