Richard, known to most as Dick, spent his life in quiet appreciation of the world’s beauty, capturing its wonders through his camera lens and embracing adventures across 72 countries. In addition to his beautiful photos and journal entries, perhaps the most enduring impact of Dick’s life is the legacy he chose to leave behind — a more than $2 million gift to Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation to support the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome. “You don’t look sick.” Children's Hospital Colorado patient ambassador, Sofia, has heard this countless times, but her health reality is far more complex. In her own words, she shares her experience with chronic pain, multiple rare diseases and how she finds hope at Children’s Colorado. https://lnkd.in/gmx66qhe

“I’m proud of myself for never giving up and always trying new things,” said Maddy, a Children's Colorado Patient Ambassador. A few years ago, Maddy's appendix burst, and she suffered almost every complication imaginable. She was able to receive most of her care close to home at Children's Colorado, Colorado Springs. Maddy recently shared her story with generous Children's Colorado donors in southern Colorado. Learn more how philanthropy impacts care for kids in southern Colorado: https://lnkd.in/gXdkcPcj

During her treatment at Children's Hospital Colorado, patient ambassador Kendall found healing through creative expression. Last week, she returned to help others do the same — creating space for patients to connect and heal through art.?
Our team members’ tools of the trade are often what you’d expect: stethoscopes, imaging technology, gauze, thermometers and numerous other pieces of medical equipment. But some of our experts work with magazine clippings, stickers, posterboard, glue sticks and scissors. This week those tools were on display as specialists from our Ponzio Creative Arts Therapy Program collaborated with Meow Wolf to create an empowerment collage event to recognize Eating Disorder Awareness Week. It aimed to educate people about the dangers of eating disorders and honor the children and families affected by them. Patients and visitors could stop by and contribute to the communal collage or take a to-go kit with them to make their own. Our team also created collages with patients in our Eating Disorder Treatment Program. It was a creative and healing break for many and a special opportunity for one former patient. “This is a full circle moment for me because this is something I did in treatment,” says Kendall, who received care here for anorexia nervosa and is now a patient ambassador for Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation, raising money to help kids like her. She created collages every week in a book she still has today. It gave her a fun break, a creative outlet for her emotions and an opportunity to talk with friends — all things she hopes participants took away from the activity. “It’s OK to be creative and do what your mind wants you to do,” Kendall says. #EatingDisordersAwarenessWeek #HereItsDifferent

Did you know that 70% of rare diseases start in childhood? Thanks to incredible philanthropic partnerships, Children's Hospital Colorado is a leader in providing holistic treatment to children with many different kinds of rare diseases - and hope to their families. One of our rare disease partners is the GRIN2B Foundation, whose gift helped us launch the first North American GRI Center of Excellence. GRI disorders are part of a larger family of genetic diseases related to ionotropic glutamate receptors, which are receptors in the brain that are important for memory, learning and other functions. On this Rare Disease Day, we are proud to share a video GRIN2B Foundation produced highlighting partnership efforts to raise awareness and increase access to treatment for GRI disorders.?#RareDiseaseDay #HereItsDifferent https://lnkd.in/gj3HeTeN
