“Kids who are victims of violence score worse in psychological function than our kids who have cancer,” said Michael Levas, MD, associate professor of pediatric emergency medicine at Children's Wisconsin. “From that standpoint, it’s worse to be shot.” Children are more likely to accept support services just after a violent injury. Numerous children’s hospitals have developed Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs (HVIPs) to decrease rates of re-injury and retaliation and increase mental well-being.
