We are excited to have Samantha Levy, Ph.D. join the podcast again this week to discuss Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). FND is a condition in which often debilitating neurological symptoms appear without a clear medical cause. This episode helps make some sense of FND, from the ways it manifests (paralysis, seizures, sensory disruptions) to the underlying emotional and psychological factors that ultimately shape it. Dr. Levy helps us understand that treatment for FND is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, including individual therapy to address emotional triggers, physical therapy to rebuild control over the body, and family therapy to create a stable support system. Wildfires have a profound impact on more than just the physical world—they affect our mental and emotional well-being in ways we often don’t fully realize. In this week’s Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast episode, I had the honor of speaking with Jyoti Mishra, PhD MBA, an expert in climate trauma and resilience, about the mental health effects of wildfires. Dr. Mishra shared findings from her research on the 2018 Camp Fire, where survivors experienced long-lasting PTSD, anxiety, and depression—symptoms that often linger long after the disaster. We talked about the phenomenon of "fire brain," a state of hyperarousal that impacts decision-making, focus, and emotional regulation. Our conversation also touched on how children are uniquely vulnerable during these events, from the physical effects of wildfire smoke to the emotional challenges caused by disrupted routines. As someone passionate about supporting children, this hit home for me. What truly stayed with me was Dr. Mishra’s emphasis on small acts of kindness and how they play a role in healing. Whether it’s a hug, a conversation, or showing up for community efforts, these moments of connection foster resilience and help us recover—individually and collectively. ?? What You’ll Learn in This Episode: ? The mental health toll of wildfires, from PTSD to “fire brain,” and how these symptoms affect focus, decision-making, and emotional regulation. ? Why children are especially vulnerable to wildfire impacts, including smoke exposure and disrupted routines. ? How small acts of kindness and community-wide support can foster resilience and healing. ? The importance of addressing both visible and invisible scars of climate-related disasters for long-term recovery. This episode is so timely, especially in light of the recent wildfires in Southern California. I hope this conversation offers insight, compassion, and a sense of hope. ??
