Respectful care takes patient-centered care to the next level. It prioritizes individuals’ needs and their desired health outcomes but also factors in how discrimination and systemic inequities can impact people’s sexual and reproductive behaviors and decision making. In their new Child Trends brief, Elizabeth Villegas, Ph.D., Lauren Kissela, Gabriel Pina, Kathryn Leifheit, Yiyu Chen, and Eliana Perrin describe the findings from focus groups of mothers with young children who received pandemic-related rental and/or utility assistance. These findings informed the authors’ policy and program recommendations that can help ensure that support systems are both accessible and responsive to the needs of families with low incomes who require emergency interventions. Brittany Paige Mihalec-Adkins, PhD, Shreya Mukhopadhyay, and Kristen Darling developed a toolkit for state-level policymakers, agency leaders, administrators, and other partners to facilitate collaborative efforts to prevent infant and toddler maltreatment through state economic and health policy.
