Virginia Ali believes in treating others the way you’d want to be treated. That’s not just talk. For 66 years, she’s led by example at Ben's Chili Bowl, showing the same respect and care for all people — from the many celebrities who have enjoyed a half smoke, to those community members in need who couldn’t afford to pay but got a free meal anyway. I had the incredible opportunity to spend lunch with “Mom,” as everyone calls her, in advance of next week’s special event honoring Virginia as a Chief Influencer at The George Washington University. (To join us on 9/10 register here: https://lnkd.in/gavhTwhP) She is now 90 years old and has been honored by the James Beard Foundation and dozens of other organizations for the small business she and her late husband Ben Ali founded, and the enormous impact it has made in the District and beyond. We took a short break from our delicious onion rings so that Ms. Ali could take a photo with a group of tourists from Ecuador who were enjoying specialities that haven’t changed much since Ben’s opened more than six decades ago. She treated them like old friends - which is what everyone gets at Ben’s.
