American Indians and Alaska Natives are celebrated each day at the Indian Health Service, but we are particularly excited to recognize Native American Heritage Month in November. This month presents an opportunity to educate the public about the proud history of Indigenous people in America, and to celebrate the rich and diverse tribal cultures that continue to thrive throughout Indian Country. This November, let’s all celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native people and ensure their rich histories and contributions can live on with each passing generation. Thank you to the Chickahominy Indian Tribe for serving as the host for the first Virginia Tribal Nations GIS Summit! We welcomed teams from Esri's Native Nations program and members of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to share resources and best practices in sitting, standing up, and dancing with data! Thank you to all of our Tribal Nation members who were able to join us from the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, the CHICKAHOMINY INDIANS-EASTERN DIVISION INCORPORATED, Nansemond Indian Nation, and the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe! Special thanks to Dolores Buljevic (she/her), Katie Kolcusky and Jennifer Rapp for your presentations and support throughout the process. We appreciated the wisdom and knowledge you shared with us and the opportunity to build tribal capacity in ways that advance Indigenous data sovereignty! We brainstormed ways to continue to build our relationship and expand access to technical tools in ways that we look forward to sharing in the future! #Indigenous #data #sovereignty #GIS

I'm proud to have our partners from the Chickahominy Indian Tribe by our side as we advocate for a more inclusive future in cancer research and treatment.
The #science is only as good as the people it serves; #VCUMassey puts #community front and center and we are #hopeful that message is beginning to resonate across the nation.

As we recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it's a good reminder that early detection truly saves lives. Regular screenings, like mammograms and self-exams, can catch breast cancer early when treatment is most effective. Schedule a screening for yourself and remind those around you to do the same. #NativeHealth #IndianCountry #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! ?? Today, as we celebrate Native Peoples and honor our histories, cultures, and identities, we want to take a moment to spotlight our “Language and Learning Resource for Non-Indigenous People”. This resource is an initial reference for funders and other philanthropy professionals exploring the intersection of Indigenous Peoples and philanthropy. At Native Americans in Philanthropy, we are actively working to Indigenize the philanthropic process; developing shared understandings through education and communication is part of that effort. We created this resource for those who wish to begin or expand their understanding of Indigenous communities and how they intersect with the philanthropy sector. This resource is not a one-size-fits-all guide to working with Indigenous Peoples, Tribal Nations, or Indigenous-led organizations. Please treat it as an entry point, not a checkbox. Enjoy and share our new resource guide ?? https://lnkd.in/eG2SPSqs #IndigenousPeoplesDay #IndigenousPeople #WeAreIndigenous #Native #NativeAmerican #Indigenous #Philanthropy #NativePhilanthropy #Nonprofit #NativeNonprofit #IndianCountry #TribalNations

Based on the possibility of Hurricane Milton becoming a storm of concern, the desire to take related precautionary and preventive measures, and the attendance cancellation notices that we have already received, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2024 USET and USET SPF Annual Board of Directors Meeting.
