You say Check-In, She hears Check-ON

You say Check-In, She hears Check-ON

With performance and goals management, having routine check-ins is the most important part of the process.?That is when employees and their manager get together to review progress being made in achieving goals and objectives.?Also, to discuss obstacles and how to overcome them.??

Having a series of check-ins lets an employee receive feedback and share what is on her mind.?While the frequency of check-ins can vary by person, it is generally accepted that more frequent check-ins can contribute to improved results and greater employee satisfaction.?It makes sense because more communication builds trust and alignment.??

But is the term “check-in'' really the best way to describe what is going on???

For many people, check-in translates to check-ON.? Read: You are checking on me.? You - my boss - are evaluating me, not helping me be successful.??Check-in sounds and feels like it’s one-way.? Check-in and tell the boss what you are doing.????

Instead, a check-in should be a time for sharing information.?It goes both ways.?We are working together to achieve success.???

What’s in a name??Does calling the conversation a check-in or anything else really matter??To some people, yes, it absolutely does.?

Naming attaches meaning to situations.?It frames the activity and supplies a clear understanding.?People associate the name with the true purpose.?The name paints a picture in our minds.???

So instead of a check-in, here are some alternatives to consider:

  • Conversation
  • Dialogue
  • Session
  • Connection
  • Discussion
  • Exchange
  • Chat
  • Us Time
  • A Visit
  • Sharing
  • Meeting
  • Together Time

Maybe there is an opportunity to change the name from check-in to something better.?And shine a light on the purpose of these conversations.??

Good point. Please, change the name in my third baby, HRsoft’s performance management tool, for check-ins. It makes sense and for positioning purposes it could really catch on as well, Ezra.
