Happy International Polar Bear Day!?Stalking or simply browsing??This young male polar bear circled us at Churchill Wild’s Nanuk polar lodge on the first day of our Artic safari. Day 2: I can’t say enough great things about Churchill Wild’s Nanuk Lodge.?We observed 14 different polar bears in their natural environment along Canada’s Hudson Bay during the span of 4 days. This has truly been the excursion of a lifetime, and I’m so grateful to guides Emri, Mike, and Karla for keeping us safe as we hiked and explored this beautiful part of the world!?Here’s a page from my travel sketchbook depicting two of the younger males that we observed playing with one another on the ice in the distance.?Polar bears tend to be solitary hunters, though adolescent males will often playfully ‘greet’ one another or spar early in the season as they scope out the future competition. Greenland’s Indigenous Inuits make up nearly 90% of the country’s population, and the official language is Kalaallisut. They, along with their ancestors, have been the loving stewards of these lands since before the 1200’s. In fact, Paleo-Inuits were thought to have migrated to Greenland as early as 2500 BC.?Greenland has been self-governing since 1979, and international law recognizes the right of Greenlanders to determine their own future.
