Busy Saturday at UNITE HERE Local 1 this past weekend! The Chicago labor movement partnered with Bill Conway to host a clinic helping asylum seekers apply for Temporary Protected Status and Employment Authorization. Asylum seekers have a home in the labor movement. We’re proud to be the first Central Labor Council in the country to support and organize a TPS clinic for asylum seekers! Shoutout to Alderman Bill Conway, AFL-CIO, IUOE Lcal 399, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) Chicago Metro, Laborers Union Local One, SEIU Local 1, UNITE HERE Local 1 and the over 70+ volunteers who helped put on the clinic!!!

Last week I had the privilege of representing the Chicago Federation of Labor in S?o Paulo, Brazil, along with folks from the AFL-CIO and the Solidarity Center, for a United States-Brazil roundtable exchange regarding securing workers’ rights in app-based platforms. Over two days, we shared ideas, experiences and strategies with our Brazilian counterparts and came to find that we are fighting the same battles to ensure workers have a livable wage, access to healthcare, and dignity and respect in the workplace. The final two days were spent at the 14th National Congress of the Central única dos Trabalhadores (CUT) Brazil, the main national trade union center in Brazil. It was incredible speaking to delegates from all around the world about issues important to workers. While we may not speak the same language, we are all fighting for the common good. It was a very uplifting and empowering week, and I’m honored to bring everything I experienced back to my work here in Chicago.
