In a nation enriched by diversity, it's critical to ensure that our educational leadership reflects the richness of our Latino/a population & historical narratives. According to the Latino Policy & Politics Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2021, the U.S. Latino population accounted for 19% of the total population, a 6% increase since 2000. However, despite this demographic shift, an imbalance exists in educational outcomes. Of the over 13,000 school districts in the U.S., only ~3% of superintendents are Latino or Latina. In response to this disparity, Chicago Scholar is amplifying Latino/a scholarly community voices – recognizing the importance of addressing this challenge & reaffirming a commitment to empowering Latino/a education. My parents immigrated to America from Mexico with nothing, speaking only Spanish, in search for the American Dream and -- instead worked tirelessly to survive paycheck to paycheck in one of Chicago's most poverty stricken steel barrios. As the son of Mexican immigrants, born & raised bilingual in inner city & multi-cultural Chicago, I understand the importance of education & academic representation. Being raised in a multicultural community surrounded by friends and family of all backgrounds – Puerto Ricans, Blacks, Cubans and Mexicans to name a few, helped inspire me. And thanks to my family & lived experiences, my passion is to give back through scholarly research in critical sports, Chicago & Mexican American history & culture empowering Latino/a scholars – to help make a difference. As a second year doctoral fellow, I know firsthand how research can inform educators & communities to better understand cultural history, create identity & challenge existing social power. Ethnographic research has the power to inform how educators can better understand multilingual groups & their use of language beyond a mere communicative purpose. Let’s connect, unite & together we will make a difference. #ChicagoScholar

I've always wondered how long I could go with no sleep. And this week I found out in the best way I could. Over the past 7 days, I went to the beautiful city of SF as part of the Silicon Valley entrepreneurship workshop, going in with the goal to learn, and coming out with a drive to build. I love that nothing about it was normal or school-ish, And that I’m starting to return to the same goal I had as a little kid: “changing the world.” After visiting 20 companies, and hearing from CEO's & COO's, I was expecting to get the formula on what makes successful people successful. But it's not a formula. It's a mindset. It’s delusion. It's obsession. It's abnormality. Thomas M. Siebel didn’t become Tom Siebel because he played a safe or finite game. Sundari Mitra didn’t become CEO of Asanto, because she chose easy. Easy was boring, it didn’t create trouble, and it didn’t shatter norms. Chris Koopmans got “overnight success” after waiting 7 years for the market to be ready for his product. As I look back, there are 3 simple, but big things I’ve taken away:? → You are the brand. → Words mean nothing without action.? → Some of the best networking happens when you are not in a suit. Silicon Valley is a place where you get a job over a game of basketball (and yes…that happened. Shoutout to Emily Campos). It’s where you end up in a Porsche shop talking with Steve Jobs’ childhood friend. And it's where you meet and learn from people like Marcin Kleczynski, Krishna Subramanian, Kelly Berger, and Cory Levy. Silicon Valley may just be a mindset, but it’s also one hell of a place and I’m starting to realize that as I return back to Chicago’s Antarctica-like weather. Bottom line is this: What I say in this post won’t matter, and as Tom Sun, CEO of ampUp has said, “Ideas mean nothing.” What matters is what I do now. And with that, I say: Welcome to Chapter 1. Sofia’s exploration and deep dive into something beautiful, abstract, and messy. Join me. Join my book. And let’s help the world together. Finally, thank you to Stephanie Halvorson Faraci, Jed Taylor, Tara Flesner and to my cohort. It’s people like you who make life so incredibly beautiful. I'm excited to change the world with you all. see you soon SF, SM #SiliconValley #TEC #workshop #ineedsleep #startups #chapter1

On gaps and research. I am not a fan of gap spotting to motivate research - but I do think you should understand the gap that you are addressing in your work - I find this table helpful for doing so. If you understand the gap, it is easier to identify the kind of work that you need to do, to address. You can find more at: https://lnkd.in/eYrNfW84 Best of luck! #academicresearch

Attending #SSWR2025 days before felt simultaneously frustrating and motivating. I was able to connect with others doing work with perinatal mental health and Latina/e communities. However, not knowing the future of our work and communities created an undertone of unease. I am unsure what the following years will hold, but I am thankful for the new and current connections in social work. Muchas gracias to Dra. Villarreal Sosa, for allowing me to contribute to your work on #ChicagoLatinaTrailblazers. Congratulations to Dr. Karen Tabb Dina on your induction to the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare! It is amazing to see you celebrated for your work and mentorship.
