A couple of months ago, we shared that Chicago Public Media was taking an important but difficult step: offering a voluntary separation program to staff in certain parts of our organization. This decision came as we worked to address a significant budget gap and our long-term financial sustainability. Our focus was on making strategic adjustments while protecting the core of our mission – delivering impactful, community-driven journalism to the people of Chicago. At the time, we promised to be transparent about the process. We are grateful to share with you now that we reached our cost reduction targets through voluntary departures. At Chicago Public Media, we remain committed to delivering impactful, independent journalism for Chicago. As we continue building a sustainable future, we’ve made the proactive decision to introduce a voluntary separation program for parts of our organization, including the Chicago Sun-Times staff and WBEZ business teams. The WBEZ newsroom will not be impacted. This step allows us to align our organization with our strategic goals while strengthening our most valuable initiatives. Our goal is to reduce costs now to avoid more significant measures in the future and ensure our mission continues to thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape. We are deeply grateful to our employees and supporters who make our work possible. With 94% of our funding coming from the community, your support fuels our vision for a stronger, more connected Chicago. Thank you for standing with us as we navigate this transition and continue to evolve to meet the needs of our city.
