What a privilege to hear from Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson today at Chicago Humanities! It was such an engaging discussion with Valerie Jarrett. So many great personal stories but I was most excited to hear Justice Jackson talk about a disability rights case—Guckenberger v Boston University brought by our friends at Disability Rights Advocates —as one of the most memorable of her career. The case was brought when she was clerking for a district court judge at the start of her career and focused on accommodations for students with learning disabilities at BU. Justice Jackson was struggling to navigate the process of securing her own autistic daughter’s learning accommodations at the time and the case stuck with her as a powerful example of how the rights guaranteed by the ADA contrasted with the reality for students with disabilities on the ground. We are so lucky to have her on the court and I encourage everyone to go hear her speak if you can! More about Guckenberger here: https://lnkd.in/eEG2nGtv

Thanks to Chicago Humanities, I spent an afternoon that felt like I was in Supreme Court Justice Katanji Brown Jackson’s living room, an intimate and inspiring conversation The program was thoughtfully introduced by Illinois Supreme Court Justice Joy Cunningham and then moderated by none other than the always phenomenal Valerie Jarrett. CHF provides exemplary accessibility, and ensured services were culturally accurate, using an all Black female American Sign Language interpreter team, Dr. Leandra Williams and Darlene Washington and also hired a Black female audio describer, Ashleigh Braggs 艾茜莉. Open captioning was excellent as always! Thank you to the CHF Access team for the warm welcome including Brittany Pyle and Lauren Pincus! Photos were not permitted during the program so none posted here of Justice Brown.

Chicago-based artist and educator Alberto Aguilar is known for his powerful and off-the-wall juxtapositions, from coiling water hoses in gardens to arranging donated shoes in front of the Centro Romero immigration aid center, or sneakily propping open a side door of the Art Institute. Aguilar joins Chicago Humanities Tapes host Alisa Rosenthal for an exclusive interview at his home studio, where they chat about his art-making process as well as preview Chicago Humanities’s free day of events, Pilsen Day Art & Experiences on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Listen to the episode wherever you get your podcasts, and find out more about Aguilar's curated day of events on our website: https://lnkd.in/gFA9xr92 Video: Fernando Saldivia Yá?ez The Artist in Residence is part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art that highlights the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities.
