One week ago, we wrapped Chicago?Beyond’s?first National Justice Convening. Together, we explored the power of Chicago?Beyond’s?Holistic Safety Framework and collective action to shift how all people are impacted by incarceration. More than 30 states were represented as we heard from people closest to the carceral system, including administrators, formerly incarcerated individuals, union leaders, staff, advocates, family members, and funders. ? Over two days, we experienced powerful moments, heard from incredible speakers, and felt the energy of a movement for Chicago?Beyond’s?Holistic Safety Framework growing stronger. We are beyond grateful to our opening keynote, Shaka Senghor, our steering committee, and speakers who spoke from the heart and reminded us of our humanity– no matter your role behind correctional walls.??? ? The National Basketball Association (NBA), Chicago Beyond and Chicago Bulls have teamed up to award $1 million to Chicago-based nonprofits driving economic opportunity for Black youth and communities. Through equitable, trust-based grantmaking, the effort is accelerating the impact of Black-led nonprofits and backing solutions led by those closest to the issues. This week, I had the opportunity to attend Chicago Beyond's National Justice Convening and learn more about building holistic safety and wellness in corrections with my colleagues Olivia Mo, Jon Ross, PhD, and Miriam Rodriguez. So excited to take this back to TASC, Inc. (Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities)'s Center for Health and Justice and our work in reentry!

Grateful for the Experience at Chicago Beyond's 2024 National Justice Convening. ?? I had the incredible opportunity to attend Chicago Beyond's 2024 National Justice Convening, and it was nothing short of transformative. As an advocate for prison reform, I walked away with invaluable insights, deeper connections, and renewed inspiration to push for meaningful change within our justice system.? This convening brought together a powerful community of changemakers, formerly incarcerated individuals, advocates, and organizations—all committed to building a more just and equitable future. The conversations, panels, and workshops not only highlighted the urgent need for reform but also reinforced the importance of centering lived experiences in shaping policies that work for all.? I look forward to applying what I’ve learned in my ongoing work with JHA. Thank you to everyone at Chicago Beyond for creating such a meaningful space for dialogue, reflection, and action. What a powerful start to the week!?It was an honor to support the groundbreaking & visionary work of Dr?Nneka Tapia?and?Chicago Beyond’s first annual National Justice Convening focused on their Holistic Safety Framework in the carceral system. I got so much hope being in a room with those?closest to the carceral system, including administrators, formerly incarcerated individuals, union leaders, advocacy groups, and corrections staff - all envisioning what it means to honor everyone’s humanity and create a more just and healed system.
