Northwestern University shed new light on its $850 million Ryan Field rebuild on Monday. The football stadium is an outlier in several ways: - It dispenses with the traditional bowl design in favor of a more compact footprint that improves sightlines and amplifies home crowd noise advantage. - With just 35,000 seats, it's 30% smaller than the old Ryan Field. - It is the most expensive in NCAA history, and also 100% privately funded. - A 15-year, $157 million community benefits agreement pays into Evanston's Good Neighbor Fund, increases financial aid for high schoolers. and supports local civic, community, and faith-based groups. Construction began in June and is expected to complete in 2026. Yesterday, the Community Development Commission approved up to $98 million in TIF support for the planned mixed-use conversion of 135 S. LaSalle St. in the Loop. Led by Riverside Investment & Development, AmTrust RE and DL3 Realty, the $241 million adaptive reuse project would repurpose more than 430,000 square feet of office space in the building as 386 mixed-income residential units. Plans also include 92,000 square feet of commercial space for neighborhood-oriented amenities such as a grocery store, health center and medical office. 135 S. LaSalle St. is the fifth Loop office-to-residential project proposed to receive City financial support this year, part of an initiative intended to address rising vacancy rates, generate affordable housing and create a more modern, sustainable mix of uses in the area.

We hosted an outstanding discussion last night at CAC exploring paths to greater housing affordability and healthy communities through innovative design and development. Our architect-panelists shared exemplary built work and new housing models for tackling the housing crisis in both urban and rural settings. Reform is needed on many fronts: from zoning and financing to design and construction. The book that inspired this talk, Housing the Nation, is on sale at the CAC Design Store or online at https://lnkd.in/ghfC5bjK A big thanks to our moderator Marisa Novara and speakers Alexander Gorlin, Catherine Baker, FAIA, Paulett Taggart, and Jaime Torres Carmona. As multiple outlets reported on Tuesday, the Chicago Bears are taking another look at the former Michael Reese site in Bronzeville for a new stadium. They had previously considered the 50-acre site, before being deterred by logistical concerns. Details are sparse, but there's talk of a mixed-use development approach with housing and retail flanking a stadium and complementing neighboring McCormick Place. We eagerly await more design intel, and hope that the preservation and reuse of Walter Gropius's Singer Pavilion is still on the table. It's encouraging that the team is interested in remaining in the city, even after pushback on their controversial Museum Campus proposal. There's reason to believe that the Bears will reconsider their request for a large public subsidy after Governor Pritzker's opposition. #stadiums #MichaelReese #megadevelopment #Bears #Bronzeville #SingerPavilion Read more: https://lnkd.in/gC2AtUTd

Read the backstory of CAC's Disrupters, an exhibition that recognizes the challenges women continue to face in the field of architecture and design while celebrating the significant gains they have made. As published in Chicago Architect Magazine by Director of Exhibitions Eve Fineman.
I am remiss in posting about an exhibition that opened over a month ago at the Chicago Architecture Center. I'm so very proud of this project: DISRUPTERS: 50 Years of Chicago Women in Architecture, that we produced in partnership with CWA. I've guest written a short piece in Chicago Architect Magazine, and would love to invite people to visit. It will be up until January 5th, 2025. One of my favorite elements of the exhibit is the Wall of Women (WOW) in which we feature over 1,000 currently practicing Chicago women in architecture. The founding members, who numbered less than 20, gathered in 1974 and laid the groundwork for people like me to thrive in our industry. The organization has continued for 50 years due to the continued advocacy, boundary pushing, glass ceiling breaking and leadership of the founders, presidents, board and members. I was so proud to see our Center filled to capacity with women on opening night! (This is also the only time you will ever see me wearing pink). MillerKnoll’s practice extends beyond designing iconic furniture; it leverages 100 years of design research to be a powerful force for good. The MillerKnoll Foundation embodies this, distributing a portion of corporate profits annually to empower underrepresented groups, foster equity, and promote sustainability.? "The work of CAC and the impact their programs are making aligns with our belief in the collective power of people, partnerships, and philanthropy which fuels our giving worldwide," says Linda Brand, MillerKnoll Foundation President. CAC is grateful to MillerKnoll for its investment in Girls Build!, and the service of Melissa Harmening, MillerKnoll employee and current CAC Trustee.?

Google's new visual for the Thompson Center atrium shows a mix of retail, restaurants, and social spaces punctuated by staircases and greenery. Over the past 6 months, visitors to the Loop as Lab exhibition at the Chicago Architecture Center have been voting for what they most want to see in a re-imagined Thompson Center. Several thousand votes have been cast by ping pong ball: First choice:?Indoor public gardens. Second choice: A year-round public market. Third choice: Public art and cultural performances. Fourth choice: New retail and restaurants. The short of it: People are looking for experiences that don't come with a price tag; and green space and cultural offerings will make the atrium feel more public and welcoming. These desires can be served by the Thompson Center's redevelopment, as designs continue to refine and improve.
