  • Congratulations to Margaret Cavenagh, a celebrated Chicago design leader, for her appointment to Managing Director of the Chicago office of Perkins&Will. Margaret will take over from Lindsey Peckinpaugh, who now moves into the firm-wide president role full time. Lindsey expertly juggled both roles over the past year. Margaret worked at Studio Gang for two decades, serving as design principal with credits that include notable projects like the Solstice on the Park apartments in Hyde Park and the in-progress O'Hare Global Terminal. She helped grow the firm from a staff of 10 to a staff of 140. We can't wait to see what's in store for the P&W Chicago studio! #architecture #Chicago #WomenInArchitecture ??: Margaret Cavenagh and Lindsey Peckinpaugh

A great op-ed from Samir Mayekar on ways to reimagine and revitalize cities, and a nice shoutout to #SundaysOnState as well! ?? Feeling extra proud of the impact Sundays on State continues to play in the Chicago Loop and beyond.

Sharing my piece from today's cover page of the Chicago Tribune Opinion section about a vision for the future of urban revitalization based on my experience from public service in Chicago. I address the widely-discussed decline of traditional downtowns post-pandemic as well as neighborhood disinvestment and provide three streets in Chicago that offer hopeful case studies for the future of cities: - South Cottage Grove Ave: The Discover customer care center employing 1,000+ in an abandoned big box retail store that is now generating significant economic activity in the neighborhood. The power of Corporate America bringing jobs to a disinvested neighborhood is a lesson I hope others will learn from and that can be repeated widely across Chicago and other cities to decrease the unemployment rates of disinvested neighborhoods. - LaSalle Street: One of the largest office-to-residential conversion projects in the country is taking place which will convert 1.6 million square feet of unused office space into a mix of apartments, restaurants, shops and workspace...over 1,000 new residential units of which 300 will be affordable. - State Street: Leaning into the experience economy, Sundays on State (along with festivals such as Suenos, Lolla, NASCAR) show the power of transforming public spaces into new amenities for residents and visitors alike. As I mention in the article: "What excites me is this: Each project made real progress, strengthening the forces that attract and retain people in urban areas. These initiatives created jobs, added housing and fostered connections when they were needed most. They were made possible through collaboration among city leaders, communities and private companies, which focused on welcoming more people to share in Chicago’s prosperity and potential. I’m excited that the spirit behind these projects echoes globally. You will find inspiration and opportunity on every block, in every neighborhood, in every city. It’s powered by the same energy that, throughout history, has spurred us to build ports and rail yards that helped us trade goods, roadways that connected our neighborhoods and skyscrapers that raised our sights and sense of possibility. Today, that energy continues to remake our cities in an image of today’s world — more dynamic, more interconnected, more inclusive. So ignore the clickbait. The story of cities today isn’t one of demise. It’s about rebirth." https://lnkd.in/gXyiixSk

  • With new conceptual renderings, Farpoint Development is sharpening their pitch for a Bears stadium at the former Michael Reese Hospital site in Bronzeville. Lamar Johnson Collaborative's renderings place the stadium at the site's south end near 31st Street, with up to 4,500 future residential units filling in surrounding land. The most novel move is a 20-acre park connecting the site to the lakefront by bridging over rail yards and Dusable Lake Shore Drive. Farpoint already has an approved PD in hand. Is the stadium crucial for jumpstarting this work, and will the Bears bite? However the winds blow, the CAC will continue to call for transparency and meaningful public dialogue. #megadevelopment #ChicagoBears #BronzevilleLakefront #MichaelReese #Bronzeville

The group trying to develop the former Michael Reese Hospital site south of McCormick Place has revealed details of its aspirational bid to get the Chicago Bears to build a new domed stadium on the 49-acre property, a pitch they contend is the best option to keep the team in the city as it struggles to win support for a new lakefront venue and mulls a move to Arlington Heights. Whether the Bears have any interest in it is still far from clear. Publicly unveiling its vision for the first time, a group led by Chicago-based Farpoint Development is touting the prospect of a mixed-use campus next to the stadium and a range of financial tools to help create it as chief selling points it hopes will win over leadership of the NFL franchise — while also providing a path to a public-private development that is more palatable for elected officials. • Chicago lost a true champion of civic life and design in Cindy Pritzker, who passed away on Saturday at 101. There is much to celebrate in her long life, and her philanthropic impact on the city's public institutions and architecture is palpable. Cindy co-founded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1979 with husband and Hyatt Hotels owner Jay Pritzker, led the charge to build the Harold Washington Library Center in the Loop, and helped enlist Frank Gehry to design the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. Cindy's legacy lives on in the cherished spaces and institutions that she helped build, and through the Pritzker Prize, which elevates the architectural profession globally.
